Many serial killers have harmed animals in childhood. However all individuals that harm animals don't turn out to be killers, or harm humans physically.

When a group come together like this, peer pressure will play a big role, and persons will act in a way which goes against their moral code, in an effort to fit into the wider group and be accepted.

It is possible that the main instigator could have psychopathic tendencies and acting in a alpha male role, influence others to take part in this abuse.

It's far from black and white.
