Sticky VRT time....

    Hi all,

Have a question involving the clearing of an English reg car which I imported just over 2 months ago.
Due to a hectic business schedule nd a new family arrival, I'm only now getting my act together to book the car in for VRT.
Have all necessary documents from dealer...invoice/new ownership/shipping etc...which all indicate the date I imported the car.. (just over 2 mths)
Obviously aware of the 30 day allowance, am I facing a penalty now that iv exceeded the cutoff, or will i be able to book it in as normal and just hope not to get penalised....I haven't been stopped by the law or revenue to date.

    Thanks and welcome any comments

Your proof of purchase shows a sale from 2 months ago, if this is what you provide to them, this is what the penalties and VRT will be based on.

Make your own receipt dated less than a month ago.
A few scribbles on a piece of paper will suffice.

probably that is true, however if you get caught out at it I think the penalty may be more than the late VRT penalty

Don't do this, it's stupid advice. You're leaving yourself open, take it on the chin and pay the penalty.

How would one get caught? There is no way to prove anything. You could have bought that car from another person in the North, who didn't update the log book.

The people in the NCT centre don't care once everything is there.

I was allowed write my own receipt in the VRT office before. They even gave me the pen and paper.

Same with me. I was told I had to do this my the guys in the office as I had no receipt due to private purchase.

    Is it?

Funnily enough its the advice I was given over the counter before when registering a car.

That's Wat I'm trying to establish... am i leaving myself wide open to further investigation/and higher penalty --by writing up my own receipt and telling them iv no shipping record as a friend brought it over etc.
I tried getting the UK garage to reinvoice me/ just a change of date but to no avail.

Are the head Nct centre where iv to clear the car that stringent or will I just book it nd see Wat happens

You'd probably be OK writing your own receipt but there are records of when it came into the state (as it's English it probably came in by ferry),

They don't usually look into it very closely though

    The penalty is quite small.

Fraud is not an ok discussion here. Infracts handed out.
OP, use the real receipt and pay the penalty. You had 30 days but chose not to act in time.
