    Nice, thanks OP!

Bought 3 of the cheaper ones :)

Thanks OP. I'm going to try the more expensive one.

I got one of those lights from Ikea with the charger built into the base and it's sh1t€. Takes about 10mins to get it lined up properly to charge. This is my last try for a wireless Qi charger.

Would this work with a htc m8. Or would it charge a nexus 7 tablet

The 2nd one states that it does work with a Nexus 7.
    I'd imagine they both do.

Not sure about the HTC M8 - http://www.gottabemobile.com/2014/05/11/how-to-add-qi-wireless-charging-to-the-htc-one-m8-2/

    Wow, never knew that.
So how do I know if the S4 that I have is actually compatible with this?

    Thanks

I was wondering exactly the same thing...

If your existing Android phone or tablet does not have native Wireless Charging then you can buy a cheap wireless charging receiver for about €2 and then just plug that into the USB port on the device and put a case on it which hides and holds the receiver in place; so for about €5 you can add wireless charging to pretty much any Android device!

Something like this receiver will work:
    http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Universal-Qi-Wireless-Charger-Receiver-Charging-Adapter-Receptor-for-Android-Micro-USB-mobile-B-type/32423436399.html

You just need to order the correct type of receiver based on the orientation of the USB port, I have a HTC M8 so I need Type B but you may have to order Type A if the port is the other way around!

You should not have to remove the case or cover to enable it to charge as long as the case is no thicker then about 4mm.

I have no experience wireless charging whatsoever, Whats the speed of the charge like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 972 ✭✭✭somebody_else

    slow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 588 ✭✭✭Wally Runs

Slow, but speed is not the point. Its USP is that you leave your phone charging (slowly) while at your desk or at home doing stuff. Keeping the battery topped up etc.

Exactly, I've got 3 of these, one in work, one on bedside locker, one on coffee table. My phone is at almost 100% all of the time.

BTW my phone is also an iPhone 6 with a QI wireless charging case.

Isn't overcharging an issue for battery longevity though...

Have you noticed a reduction in capacity from so much charging?

Received the Qi charger from the OP post yesterday. Doesn't seem to work with my Nexus 7 2013. Tried a couple of different chargers, no go :-/

I had forgotten about these. Mine still haven't arrived.
Contact the seller and see what they say.

I went for the 2nd one. Which one did you buy?

I went for the first one. It seems to be no longer available. Ah, it only cost €1.74 anyway, no big deal anyway if seller doesn't have more of them.

I just checked my orders. It seems I ordered the 1st one as well :o.
I must have ordered it before I saw the 2nd.
    Neither here yet.

Got mine last week(the second type). For €3 or whatever it was it works really well. Getting about a 10% charge per 30 minutes connected by usb to my pc (Galaxy S6 Edge) - it's never going to be terribly fast I guess! With it being so cheap I'm conscious to always plug it out of the pc when not charging.

Still waiting on my ones, the round type!
    Bought 3 so there's a chance that 1 might work haha :)

UPDATE: I managed to fix my wireless charger (round type).

Figured why not have a go, since I've often spent more on a bag of Taytos anyway.

There was only one of the wires from the induction coil attached to the little circuit board, the other had come loose as the solder had failed. I believe electronics repair people call this a "dry joint".
Anyway I reattached the wire and hey presto, my tablet now gives a chime when I place it on the pad and shows that it is charging.

Hint for any other fixers. The underside of the circuit board is stuck to the bottom of the pad with a rubbery adhesive patch. Once you've pried the base off a little, stick in something like a credit card to take off the base. The circuit board is attached to the top side with a small Philips screw near the micro USB port.
I was not aware of this and ended up breaking off the corner where the screw is. But it made no major difference and I used a big blob of blue-tack instead to keep the circuit board in place. It's a bit of a cowboy job, but it is holding the micro USB port aligned and firm, so it's good enough for me.

Just thought I would share my experience with wireless charging and various devices I have bought.

I used to have a Samsung Galaxy S4, which does not support wireless charging, but I bought a special case for that. The original Samsung wireless case costs more, but it's a perfect fit. It makes the phone slightly thicker, but it's guaranteed to work.

The alternative is to buy a wireless charging adapter, like these. These fit under the standard case, connected to the battery port available there. With the S4 fitted with the Samsung case, I was able to charge it at home, at work, and in the car.

There are also some wireless charging adapters for phones that do not have battery ports. These are meant to be connected to the phone through the micro-USB port, and tucked under the phone's cover. I tried one of these for my wife's Xperia phone, but it didn't charge at all. I think the phone didn't like the connector, which only had 2 wires. The adapter worked fine for my Kindle keyboard.

My first charger was the single disc from Ikea. It was expensive, but it was readily available. Cheaper options on Aliexpress, with various degrees of success.
For example, for the car, I bought this one. It's worked a treat, I simply drop the phone in it, and it charges.

For my office, I bought some of the cheaper options, but these are much less powerful, and getting the position correct is more of a challenge.

I've recently switched to a Galaxy S6, which has wireless charging built in. I use it with an OtterBox case, but it still charges ok.

I also use a Nexus 7, with a Moko case (quite thick). This charges easily on the Ikea charger, but I have to take the case off for the cheap Chinese ones.

As far as power is concerned, the Ikea charger and the more expensive silicone one are great. They're charging my devices even with the cases on. The cheaper ones from Aliexpress are less powerful, and you either have to take the case off, or aim it just right to begin charging.

Hope this info helps clear up some questions.
