Just occurred to me watching the rugby world cup, would the addition of a bonus point system be of use in gaa leagues? Let's say you get your 2 points for a win but offer a bonus point for scoring 3 goals or more, might encourage more attacking play and coaches may have to plan for goals rather than the 'take your points and the goals will come' approach in football and increasingly, in hurling.
Would also have the advantage of cutting down on the need for play offs etc. to seperate teams on level points at the end of the leagues...

I see where your coming from and it's a good idea in theory and any romantic gaa fan would be interested in it but I think teams that have less natural scoring forwards resources, money etc, player number like sligo clare roscommon down monaghan to an extent even Donegal it is conflict interest as there being asked play games won't suit the players they have for all out Kevin keegan attack minded football so in essence could very well win games by not scoring goals but actually find themselves way off other all because Dublin kerry have natural forward etc

    I wouldn't be for it
This sweeper system gets too much negative views imo when only for such styles Donegal Tyrone monaghan wouldn't created new life in the championship when kerry and Dublin would be cake walking every year to all ireland

Look at Japan in the rubgy it was hard enough for them to win matches but bonus points actually still had them worse off than Scotland over bonus points when unfortunately imo Japan playing more attractive full ptich rubgy it's just Scotland were able to score more tries from conventional style system which was ironic when Japan imo we're the better rubgy team and the first time in world cup history team won three games didn't make the quarter finals

Bonus points actually went against Japan

In rubgy bonus points does work better yes in other games but already in gaa there's huge divide with the elite team this will only further widen it

These steps imo are only short term fixes
To really change the game style and not loose competing team of lesser resources or limit there chance of success imo is the gaa to invest real money in the roscommon sligo under age structure so in time better naturally talented players are developing

Too often the gaa imo has short term fixes
For real sustainable success you must have organisation and structure
I think that there's a beauty in itself in the blanket defence if done correctly where the ball is moved at pace in the counter attack where the end justified the means and not laboured methodical hand passing

If anything like basket ball where you have a limit of time to score imo a restriction on the amount of hand passing in a game would be more desirable when it would actively encourage team coaches to coach and promote the kick pass in football which imo isn't as good as it should be

In the league you could develop a system like roscommon for example And win seven games but closely yet your doing excellent at what you have available
That's fourteen points in seven league games

Dublin have the ability to score three goals in each of there five games if they had to so they get a bonus which is three points so that's fifteen point from five games and they can still loose two games but they finish ahead of roscommon
That imo isn't fair when Dublin have an abundance of forward talent
Imagine your roscommon doing brilliant to get promotion and then you win all the games in the new division but by a rule that favours the stronger team you not by your own doing still find yourself off the top
All it would do is allow the gap at the top get bigger imo
All the will in the world you won't score goals unless you have natural talent to do so

Canavan is the most natural talent footballer ever but have no doubt only for Tyrone defence style would never won an all ireland
And imo that would have been a crying shame

Imo it's not realistic to expect all counties play with natural attacking flair and style

Dublin kerry Galway cork and mayo possibly could play free flowing football
Donegal have to be defensive but imo Donegal counter attack is a joy to watch

Cian o Neill won't have the natural talent like Dublin to play orthodox football but what gives Kildare hope is playing a system that can compete with Dublin

Doing those changes of bonus points in the league imo serves no purpose when the truth is come championship it won't survive and you can't play one style of football in the league and then in championship a different style
The league is about building your system of play for the championship
Imo it won't work the bonus point but I agree in an ideal world it would be great
