    Hello,

We are going to West Cork next week for a few days and I want to do some birdwatching. I am checking a number of sources to pick a few sites (I have the book Finding Birds in Ireland), but the variety is overwhelming. There is just too much.

We will stay in Clonakilty and drive one day along the coast to Baltimore (maybe Mizen Head, depending on how much time we have) and one day to Kinsale.

We are going with the kids so I will not be able to spend long hours in any given place or venture into somewhat inaccessible places.

Appreciate if anyone can recommend 2 or 3 places in each direction.

    Thanks

In October in West Cork, the main birds to look for are migrant passerines. I am afraid they are not very family friendly. All of the major headlands and Islands have the potential to have rarities but they can take time staring into a hedge. With kids, I suggest Baltimore to Sherkin Island as an easy day trip (10 minute ferry crossing from Baltimore). Otherwise, the places on Galley Head with rarities in the past will be boring for a family. The old Head of Kinsale, maybe ditto. The Mizen Head lighthouse used to be good to visit and family friendly; have not been for 15 years.
