James O'Brien, 22, of The Mill, Baltinglass, Co Wicklow pleaded guilty to the assault of Mr Creighton in the early hours of 1 Jan 2014 on Saint Dominic's Road, Tallaght.

This seems very very low to me. I suppose the reasoning is that the victim died later in hospital, so he was only charged with assault? Still seems like very weird sentencing- am I missing some context?

The reasoning given seemed to be more:

she took into account the fact that he pleaded guilty, has since left Tallaght and has no previous convictions.

It would seem it was actually a group assault and the guy jailed today was only one of the group. Still a shocking sentence.

So basically, in Ireland you can kill someone and only get a year in jail. Great ol country we live in. :-|

Although one sentence had been passed, the case is still before the courts and therefore we cannot allow discussion.
