Which is better Land cruiser or Land rover

Some people love land rovers, some prefer Land cruisers. Spotted this the other day and I was thinking no self respecting Land cruiser driver would do this. So have you got any embarrassing 4x4 photos to add fuel to the debate?

Land rovers are no longer meant as off road cars. I live in the middle east where we use our cars to the limits off road. Land Cruiser is King... The one exception is that you can still buy the old boxy Nissan Patrol. You'd rarely see a Land Rover or Range Rover leave the tarmac. They are better suited to the school run, or posing at a McDonald's Drive-through... + if its got that feckin' air suspension, you may as-well just throw a big wad of cash down the toilet... what a nightmare, beware of speed bumps.

Drove one in oz, 4L v8 petrol from memory? They are a bit of crack around town but no farm bus but they are mighty fun on the sand doons. They are a remake of the old FJ. Did ye get the new hilux out there yet? They are a lovely job.

Hilux is a low spec workhorse here... only sold direct to businesses and diesel only (general consumers can't purchase diesel)...

But apparently the new one is going on general sale here... it'll be exciting to see, but it'll have to go up against the big American Pickups like the F150 & RAM's...

Ford launched a consumer version of the Ranger last year & while it was well received, I don't think it turned into sales...

Hilux will be a different matter... Toyota is very well regarded

Have owned both over time. The discovery looks better but the Land cruiser beats it hands down on reliability front.

We have a 02 Land Cruiser and 03 Defender, owned both from new. They both are excellent machines. Defender is better off road. Land Cruiser is much more comfortable on road and better for towing long distances.

Land Cruiser tends to require less maintenance but when something goes wrong it parts are a whole lot more expensive and generally harder to change. Defender is much easier to take apart and put back together (although I have had a lot more practice ).

But the important thing is the Defender wins hands down in coolness. Sure it drives a bit like a tractor but it is a farm machine.

No bother, if doing lot of trailer road work hard to beat a cruiser but if it's a farm truck these are the job. Really need big tyres it makes some difference to comfort both on and off road

Biggest issue with most farmers jeeps is they are fitted with wrong tyres for off road work. Although you can hear my tyres coming up the road long before you hear the engine.

We have a 05 trooper with bf goodrich tyres. Pulls the tri axle ifor williams at her ease through fields

My experience is disco are rubbish they rot just looking at them not a huge amount of power,the cruiser is a weapon to pull but expensive and kind of thirsty.
Troopers are a right yoke to pull and comfortable but the oil sensors play up and injector seals go both causing hard starting pretty easy to change.
Pajero sport was decent didn't gave any major issues bar head full leather was a dream to drive.
Normal pajero swb was lovely drive pretty thirsty again head faults

Saying that find a good one of any of the above mentioned will be trouble free.
Iv seen vehicle with 200k+ out preform 80k of the same models.

Have 200tdi with a lift kit and 33" bfg muds it would go places that you couldn't walk.

Have Discovery TD5, Defender 300TDi at home. Used to have Discovery 3, untouchable driving comfort against the Toyota.

The Discovery does all the towing these days as the defender 300TDi needs some new bushes to get it through the DOE and I havent had time to get around to a few other bits.

Couldn't fault the disco over the years. Certainly owes me nothing with the work she's done. No major issues, clutch slave cylinder and a sensor. Just put a new clutch in to her last week. I put new 365/70R16's BFG AT's on a while ago and they are noticeably heavier on juice and pulling away needs a few more rev's.

The Land Rover boys always seem to be enthusiast types with triggers broom syndrome and a toolbox in the back!

Ah that's a bit silly. We'd two defenders and a disco 2 currently. The Disco is rolling around with 280,000 miles and still starts on the button. The two defenders were workhorses too; both putting big miles up. Think the only major work on one 200tdi was a steering box and the occasional dif seal.

The 200tdi was a fantastic engine for something designed in the 80s.

I'd buy all three again. Great jeeps.

I have had them all from hilux to defender, Amazon to Range Rover. For farming you will not beat defender. You could hose it out if you like. Hilux are good but they give their own troubles too. I'm totally converted to Land Rover

Father in law swares by his (20 year old) Land Rover Defender 110.

Apparently it's narrower than some other 4X4s which makes it ideal for his farm!

If you're looking for a lively motor - Range Rover Sport 4.4V8 petrol is some weapon.
Edit: Plus its well able to hold it's own offroad. I've had one up mountain trails.

I find most anti-land rover boys have had very little if any actual experience of them.

+1 I've seen them used across the middle east / africa / asia. Hard to beat as a workhorse. They are what the defender could've been if there was investment in it when it was needed.

I've a SWB Landcruiser. My first 4x4 and I doubt if i'll ever go back to a car. I don't do that much mileage now so the landcruiser doesn't cost that much to run. I bought mine in 2008 and it only lost €6K in value since.

Had one in oz twenty years ago and really regret not shipping it home. Great workhorse and extremely versatile.
