Its a good enough article, but my favourite line has to be this:

It says about half of the tourists are Shia Muslims - Don't know if that's true or not.

It also says most Iranians are Shia Muslims - which is true, about 90% - 95% of the population are Shia.

What's the problem here?

This is one of those somebody said something that sounds like a rude word, like articles about Ed Balls in British parliament.

Iran is definitely on the list, and I'm not Shiite.

When I was young any coverage of sectarian strife in the middle east used to use the term Shiite - during the Lebanese civil war of the 1980s for example.

By the time of the Iraq debacle in the noughties they were almost exclusively referred to as Shia.

Why the change? When did it happen? Does it really matter? Do I not have more important stuff to be worrying about?

Shia is a noun whereas shiite is an adjective and noun. So when in doubt just use Shiite because it's always going to be correct. You know, unless you're implying that Iran isn't mostly shiite like the OP.
