Goodmans vp2500 VHS video recorder - Remote

My father in law has a Goodmans VCR. Last week he let the batterys run out on the universal remote he was using for it. My father in law has a Goodmans VCR. Last week he let the batterys run out on the universal remote he was using for it. We tried the 8 or so codes under the Goodmans section of the manual but only one of them will work basic functions; Play, pause, on, off, up, down, etc. When he goes into the menu to set time, date, record etc,, the up, down, right, left arrows won't move the cursor.

Up to last week the remote was doing all these things fine. Does anyone know of another code I can use? It's a Lidl Silvercrest remote.

Or failing that will a remote from another make, model work with this VCR?
