Buying: Golf Gt Tdi (Advice)

Just looking for some advice as it's my first time looking to buy a car on donedeal apart from local dealer so i have a fear of something bad happening.

So i don't have much knowledge about cars and i know i should get something else but i believe a price for a high spec car is hard to turn down?

Ive been told there have been some problems though and the guys english (text) doesn't seem like its his 1st language.

I'm worried about the reliability of gt tdi golf's actually i heard they tend to have some sort of leaks all the time so this doesn't sound too good for me. I'm the type of person who isn't used to parking a car in a garage every month as i had no problem with my old one!

So as you can see in the images theres some dent and also he said to me in the messages that theres a minor leak, ive attached a message of it too, would appreciate any help at all especially if you've a good knowledge of golfs, thank you!

Pretty impulsive person that puts a timing belt in a car then buys something else

    Link to the ad?

Those Mk4s were good cars in their day but they are old cars now and the bad ones vastly outnumber the good ones. So be very careful or you will end up with a money pit.

Would €1,5 be a good price for a high spec car like that even though due to the dents and he said there might be some leaks?

Ive attached an image crucial whether i'll buy it or not so can anyone explain what he is on about please!

Have you been offered it fir €1500?

I had a mk4 golf tdi and was a good car, but while i was searching for one, i test drove a few and you can tell from the ones that wasn't maintained. With the car been that old it may have some issues due to wear and tear over time but if the owner(s) looked after it well, it should drive fine. Check the turbo, does it pull well when you accelerate or does it make a whistle noise. I test drove one and the the turbo sounded like it was going but the guy selling it insisted it wasn't. Walk away if you think there is something wrong. There are plenty more golfs out there

Honestly OP going out buying cars in that price range you need to be fairly savey about motors.
For someone not clued in you will easily get stung with a motor needing a hefty repair bill.

You see so many threads on boards from people who have bought a nice looking car on DD only to find out it's a lemon. Then there follows the realisation that it's buyer beware and no comeback on being ripped off.

If your not clued in make sure to bring someone who knows their stuff about cars along with you.
Buying in the sub €2k you should also have a few €€€ set by for a surprise repair.

In the photos it does look a nice motor. I've a soft spot for those Golfs, but there are plenty of lemons out there.

I wouldn't buy any car that's leaking oil or diesel, it sloppy maintenance not to get it addressed immediately , it might be nothing but it could also be something major that's been bodged together with superglue and chewing gum to cover up

in fact they should be allowed on the road , could kill some poor lad on a motor bike or bicycle

Yeah got an offer for €1,500 sounds too good to be true? Might bring a mechanic with me.

Appreciate the feedback here from the board members and the moderator thanks a million!

Someone dropping a grand rather than fixing a "simple" problem is a bit odd. Again considering they apparently put a timing belt in it last week it's a bit odd.

I don't think 1500 is too good to be true, it's certainly not being given away at that price anyway. The car is going on 14 years old, has 142,000 miles on the clock and is due an NCT in February.

As said that car would want to be inspected by a mechanically knowledgeable person as most of them at that age have been ragged by young lads who think they are Porsche beaters.

I would be very afraid of the terrible spellings and also about going from 2500 to 1500.

No matter what bring a good mechanic and give it a good going over before any cash changes hands.

Just look like the usuall im bad spelling so not smart enough to pull a scam.

    Be very careful op.

No problem just as said be very careful.

A lot of them golfs had a hard life also not all but they can end up costing so much to fix.
Little things here and there and then other bigger things can and most likely go wrong.

I disagree. These things are still fetching stupid money. If it was any way decent it would be worth €2500. If it was a very good example it would fetch €3000.

There is something kinda odd with that car .
In the ad it says 110ph 2002.
i am assuming the 110 means hp.
    Afaik in 2002 they didnt do a 110hp gttdi only a 130 or 150.
The 110 might be Kw which would equate to 150bhp but afaik the 150s came with the wooden inserts on the dash , doors and gearstick so that doesnt make sense.
On the back door its red T red D and red I
on the engine cover it says silver T silver D red I.

Its coming up on cartell.ie as 110bhp GT TDi

Probably VRTd as a 110bhp to get the cost down. There was no 110bhp version in 2002. It's more than likely a 130bhp.

EDIT: I checked it via the VIN and it's a 130bhp alright.

That's if it really is a GT also.

I did have a 110 Leon years back but fully agree real gt had 130 or 150 & were(are) lovely machines if right.

This is a whole other debate but there is no such thing as a "real" GT. They were just badged that way by UK VW dealers.
