hey folks, I hope this is the best place for this thread.

A long while back when I had more money than sense I bought a Pentax K-r in Japan and basically let it gather dust (in it's bag at least!).

Lately, I've been reading up on photography and I'm garnering an interest in it, out and about messing with the settings and I'm really enjoying it.

It came with the stock 18-55mm lens (is that right? Have I basically just thrown out jargon I heard in the hopes that I sound like I know what I'm talking about? :P ).

Basically I'm just wondering if this camera is any good! I like taking a few landscapes/outdoor shots and I'm also wondering if I should start looking at other lenses, and what recommendations you fine people have. :) I'm completely at sea with the lenses!

Actually wait, I have two more questions:

    1. Any reading material/resources I should check out?

    2. The case is a like crap. Any recommendations for a better one? Something I can easily carry around with my normal satchel. Or are there any good DSLR/laptop combo bags out there?

Apologies for the lengthy first post, and thanks in advance!

Your camera is great - no need to look at buying anything new until you've really found the limits of its capabilities, and that won't be for quite a while.

Read through this thread - plenty of advice there for a newbie:

As in that thread, read Understanding Exposure. Enjoy it.

Many many thanks for that eoglyn, that's already helped quite a bit! As far as I can gather, I should pick up the camera and get shooting! :)

Exactly! Get out shoot loads and you'll improve in no time.

Okay, I've been out and about and discovered an issue with my camera.

The rotating selector dial is broken I think. When I rotate it to the left (or 'down' in selector terms), it acts up, sometimes rotating through the options in the opposite direction.

Any recommendations as to where I can bring the camera for someone to have a look at it? Sorry for diverting the topic of the thread.
