    How about

Thank you, that's really lovely of you both, but I want to do X.

In my experience, 30 years, in-laws need to be told to butt out every so often.

    All the best OP ;)

You don't in my opinion. They're your husbands parents so he should deal with it. Presenting a united front of course rather than saying Cruais wants to do this.

Why not wear the 100 yr old robe. Does tradition mean nothing to you??

The easiest way is to just have him say you'd both rather use your own choice.

Or if you want to be really diplomatic, pop him into the old gown for an hour and then into the new one, and have photos of him in both?

You could just put him in the little old gown for the ceremony then change him into the new one straight afterwards.

Christenings only take about 20 mins anyway.
