PPS appointment need some medical form?

    Hi everyone,

I have moved to Ireland, from Scotland, with my wife, whom is Irish and has her own PPS, I called the Galway office, took 6 days to get an answer, finally spoke to a lady who very abruptly asked why I wanted a PPS number, I replied that I have moved to Ireland to live and currently seeking employment.

I was informed that as I have no job I do not need a PPS number; however she did say I can get one if I take in a form from a doctor. Sadly she did not mention which form, and when asked she replied "I suggest you Google it", I have spent days " Googling it" and the only form I could did is for a medical card.

I have printed off the form and on the first page it asks for a PPS number, so I am hoping someone here might shed some light on if this is the correct form. I can't get a PPS to VRT our car as it's in my wife's name, and as our plan is to start our own business I do not fancy waiting till next year for a PPS.

I guess I just like to ensure I am abiding the regulations of where I reside, plus my father in law said I need PPS in order to seek medical help, I have a spinal injury which requires me to use morphine to ease the pain.

Many thanks in advance and thanks for having such an informative board.

Replying on my phone so its difficult to embed links but look at the following for details about applying for a PPSN

    http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Personal-Public-Service-Number-How-to-Apply.aspx

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/personal/ppsn.html

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/irish_social_welfare_system/personal_public_service_number.html

As for the unhelpful 'lady' in the Galway office, the less said the better. I don't want an infraction or thread ban.

Thanks for the info FishOnABike, I did not intend to sound nasty about the lady at the Galway office, we had visited the Intreo centre in Clifden and asked there and was informed that only Galway could help. I do have an appointment for the start of November but could not find what form it was I had to get.

My wife is going in to the Clifden centre on Monday to change her PPS to her married name so I will ask them for the form (REG 1), my wife has mentioned that there is no rush for me to get a PPS number as we are only temporarily living in Clifden whilst we buy a house, once we have settled then I will register with the local doctors there.

    Many thanks again.

Glad to be able to help.

You didn't sound in any way nasty about the 'lady' in the Galway office. Her own actions and attitude spoke loud enough for her.

It's a poor reflection that a random person on an internet forum can be more helpful than the 'civil' servant whose job it is to help members of the public with their enquiries. Her unhelpful arrogant indolence should have no place in a public service organisation. It is her job to be knowledgeable, helpful and polite in dealing with the public.

Funny thing is the lovely lady at the Clifden Intreo did mention that they themselves have lodge a complaint about the lack of answering the calls at Galway, they apparently have numerous complaints, others phoning them to try get a PPS number. I love Ireland and the people, obviously seeing how I married a lovely Irish lass. In my opinion, and I can say this being Scottish and previously married to a Scottish woman, that the Irish are far better lol.

Anyway thanks for the help, two of the websites I had viewed before and the third was most helpful, I will be calling, or try to, Galway office on Monday to cancel the appointment as there is no point till we have purchased the house we have placed an offer on. Bit of a nail biter as the first one we offered on went way above our budget, thankfully the second one there is no other offers on it.

Btw to everyone I wish ye all the best tomorrow in the Rugby, big day for us with Scotland playing first, then Ireland, total nail biter of a Sunday lol.

Good to hear you had a better experience in the Clifden office.

I'd say it will be be fun in your house if both teams get through to the semi finals. Here's hoping ye win (the quarter finals that is ;)).

Not so sure on Scotland's chances, Ireland on the other hand has a good chance despite the absence of Paul O’Connell, at least Johnny Sexton is going to be in the match ;)
