Rio 2016: Who are our likely qualifiers, which sessions should I book tickets for?

    Hey all,

Not a boxing expert by any means, but have a casual interest. Going to Rio next year, mainly for athletics, but while there I'm going to 7 other sports. I have tickets to Katie Taylor's final (should she make it), but am wondering what other boxing sessions are worth buying tickets for. I'm not a boxing anorak, so I'd be worried about buying tickets and then having no Irish to support. An Uzbek V a Mongolian doesn't really do it for me!

So this is where your help is needed. A few questions:

    1) Who is currently qualified for Rio? I know Conlon, Barnes and Ward are. Anybody else officially qualified as of yet?

    2) Who are the likely qualifiers, who have not qualified yet? And how many boxers do you anticipate qualifying out of the 13 weight classes for men and women? I know Katie is almost a certainty to qualify, but who else, and in what weight classes?

    3) Why was Paddy Barnes not competing at the World Championships? Did he skip it because he was already qualified for Rio or was he injured? How likely a contender is he for gold this time around? His final is early in the Games and as I will only be arriving into Rio about a week into the Games, his final would be the only realistic one I could attend out of his fights (I have Beach Volleyball tickets at the same time as his Semi Final). But wondering is it worth the risk buying tickets for it.

    4) Looking at the link below, in the boxing section, can you advise on the best sessions from Friday 12th onwards, that have the highest possibility of Irish interest. I know it's still 10 months out but your best guesses would be appreciated.

    Many thanks

I am hoping O'Reilly at MW makes it. Has two chances left next year. Brendan Irvine would have to move to 52. Very tough ask to qualify. I am thinking only 5 will make it. The three you mentioned, and O'Reilly. Not great, and to medal from those 4 will be tough. Throw in Katie and we should get at least one medal, unless she is upset. I would love to see DOJ qualify at 60 through the APB format.

Barnes didn't qualify for the recent WCs. He was out injured for the Europeans earlier this year, and they were a qualifier for the worlds. It's ridiculously competitive. So, aim for the weights our lads are at.

My prediction is 3 medals. Katie, Paddy and Ward. Paddy well capable of gold. Katie as well. I don't think Ward is.

You don't fancy Conlon for a medal?

    Who is DOJ?

Sorry. 4 medals. Forgot our bloody WC. David Oliver Joyce is our longest serving successful amateur. He competes in APB. Love to see him get to his 1st games. He would be close to 30 should he make it.

What many may not realise is that all our qualifiers could go out in the first rd. All quality boxers in Rio. Very deep pool. The draw will be somewhat important.
