Folks I've been following Donn's tips from Newstalk for the last few weeks - 5 losers so far. There are older threads discussing his tips, but these are totally out of date.

My question is are any other boardsies following him and if so what are the results like?

Part of me says 'Donn would not give out rubbish tips''. But another part of my brain says ''why charge people €1,500-ish per year ( his website has a subscription section ) when you are giving the same tips out for free on the radio?''

    Any thoughts?

I guy i used to work with signed up to the Donns tips for a three month stint. Cant remember what the fee was but it wasnt cheap. Some weeks he would receive 2/3 recommended tips and a few more during a big flat meetings. The Don would recommed how much to wager so my mate backed his tips religiously for three months and lost an absolute fortune, reckon he won about 5/30 races. He might know his stuff but the Don is a joke as a tipster. My mate received an email after his subscription ended asking was he interested in contiunuing using the the Dons tips,my mate just send back a mail saying 'i'm not waisting another penny on that uselss bastard, never contact me again'.

Wow - to read the website you'd be making a fortune.

The real show stopper is the upfront cost of the tips.

Anyway good to know that, no point in backing his Newtalk tips if the paid service is rubbish too.

He's hardly giving out better tips on the radio, and if the website tips are rubbish...well the radio ones are hardly better.

Didnt even think he was a tipster/punter. Just thought he was a breeding/stats nerd.

Donn the singer porbably would be better tipster than the 'horse expert'.
Gary o' Brien from ATR not a bad tipster, put up a nice double yesterday. I also post on NOT606 forum, some very good tipsters on there and a decent all round bunch,be sure to pop on and say hello.

Yeah if you look at Hugh Taylor from ATR on twitter he has good results but the prices he quotes disappear in seconds, you'd want your Betfair window open and be ready to go with whatever he tips.

If you can get on at the prices he quotes you'd make a few quid. It's not really gambling, more like data entry though - you have no chance to check what he is saying about the horses, just tap in your bet.

One thing i always do is check bet365 the night before the irish card, they always seem to under price their irish book compared to PP etc

ALWAYS, they have their prices up before PP and then when PP release their prices they will cut the odds if there is a big diference between the 2 and there usually is!!

Anyone who pays for tips is off their head, its just some bloke in his penneys boxer shorts and a dodgy laptop putting up 'HIS' fancies, tips are when it comes from jockey/trainer/owner

I actually find Dons tips fairly good, when they dont win they usually run well in defeat. But look it's gambling on horses you're always going to lose more than you win.

All tipsters are streaky its just the nature if things but Hugh Taylor has a proven return rate that is impressive if you can get the prices, while Gary O'Brien also is solid dont forget the Laurence Taylor Speed ratings - as a fun Canadian I back all of them (there are usually 5 or 6 bets between the three of them) most days. Yesterday three wins and two places returned x4 the stake (they were pretty short priced)

You mean the ones from Newstalk? As I've said the last 5 have lost, but maybe they ran well, maybe betting each way is the best way to look at them

Donn seems to concentrate too much on finding "value", often overlooking the very obvious. I remember he frequently opposed Kauto Star in most of his races, purely from the point of view of looking for "value" against him, which was fairly pointless a lot of the time, especially when the King George came around.

It is not easy. Look at my blog in the Gambling/Challenges/Blogs on boards.ie.
I started the season with 1 win out of 21, and then it got worse. :)

    Mod edit: <snip>

Please do not Post PMs from other users, especially those who have had their post(s) deleted because they simply signed up to complain about a business or, in this case, a tipping service.

That pm you posted was on this thread but obviously was deleted.

FWIW, doubt this tipster is any better or worse than the general population of tipsters. If they were that good, there would be no need for us making daily selections and we would all be retired by now from using their service.

Fair point. It would save a **** load of time not having to read form though if you could get a relable tipster. :)

A tipster that could break even would do me

Sample size, judge the man over a long period of time. His website suggests he does well in the long term, but at the price he charges, he'd want to be.

As usual, when I try to contribute to a discussion, I learn lots from the discussion, and then some more from internet searches.
It is very difficult to know what your maximum losing run is likely to be because all the calculators use betting at a fixed strike rate (e.g. if your strike rate is 10% expect a maximum losing run of 66 !!!). Most of us bet all over the shop, evens, 5/1, 16/1, and so on.

Here is a link that shows maximum losing runs
    http://false-favourites.co.uk/blog/how-to-calculate-strike-rates-and-losing-runs-in-betting/

The reason for posting that boring link is further down under the heading Resources is a nice piece of free software called The Staking Machine. I downloaded it and will be checking it out.
