Opel Astra - Timing Chain

Hi, just wondering if anyone has experience with the timing chain in opel astras.
    I have a 2004 opel astra 1.4 petrol for sale. (h model)
It was viewed today by a mechanic who was looking at it for someone who was interested in buying it.
He pointed out that the timing chain was creating noise and needs to be changed.
I know nothing about mechanics but have to agree it sounds more like a diesel engine.
Anyway I thought with chains they did not have to be changed unlike belts......
Am I been given a bum steer here or could it actually need replacing?
Any advice would be really appreciated!
