Today I topped a field that had thistles in it and it wasn't fully grazed so I topped it and spread slurry on it. The neighbour/friend was saying that it was stupid and that u don't top in October ? Opinions??

Between myself and Dad we've almost all fields here topped over the last week. No harm when you can travel them at this time of year! They'll be better prepped for growth next spring too.

Lad here topped yesterday with a disk mower set high and has cattle out on it today! He reckoned they would graze it out better for spring that way?

Thistles probably gone into seed at this stage so he might only be spreading the seed around the place by topping this late. (thistles were late to flower this year too, must be the poor weather)

The fella I was on about topped another 3 or so acres yesterday and cattle were in it this morning, the last bit he did is cleaned out perfect topped grass and all which I don't think they would have touched standing! Of course he is a dairy man and with all the money they're bringing in they can well afford the diesel..... (Waits for the backlash) ðŸ˜

Next year spray in June and when you'll top at your usual time and wont see any thistles or dirt for a few yrs!

I passed a lad today with a haybob on the back. I'd say he still has the turf to bring home!!
