BTEA Approved, came home to weird letter today

    Hoping someone can help me.

I was on JSB for 9 months and with my Welfare Officer made plans to return to 3rd Level Education. I started my course mid-september, and was approved BTEA. The payments have been received into my bank account for about 3/4 weeks now. I have a 3 year old son in creche, and this payment just about covers that cost (hubby is working).

I came home today to a letter from Social Welfare, saying that My JSB claim will be exhausted in mid-October (doesnt make sense as it was exhausted in Mid-Sept), and that my last payment of BTEA is payable to October 2015 (end of this month). I dont understand whats happening, I've only just started getting this payment. It says:

"If you wish to continue on Back to Education Allowance you will need to satisfy the criteria for Job Seekers Allowance or Jobseekers credits". It then states that Jobseekers Allowance is a means tested payment, and that they enclose a form UP1b (there was no form in the envelope??).

I'm panicking and very confused. I thought that once I was approved for BTEA, that was it, it wasnt means tested?

My son has Special Needs and has therapy costs each month, my husbands salary covers the mortgage, household bills, petrol, weekly shop, and therapies, my payment covers 90% of the creche fees (€200 pw). Without this payment I cannot afford to be in college.

Can anyone explain what this is all about??

The norm when your are on jsb and go on BTEA then the cumulative days on JSB is frozen until you sign back on next may/june in which case your jsb will exhaust and you will have to apply for jobseekers allowance. From what you say your jsb should have exhausted mid september perhaps its did and it exhausted before you started the course and if this is the case you will have to show that you qualify for jsa or a credit claim. The best thing you can do is call into your office and get clarification on this.

Eastbono: CT is nolonger frozen on JB/BTEA so students now Ben Ex in the normal way and must qualify for a qualifying payment to continue on BTEA or else continue as credits only.
