    HI,

Looking to trade up to a newer car from my current golf

    My budget is €16-17,000
Current car is a 02 so not expecting much for trade-in/scrappage

Annual commute is about 20,000 miles
I would be looking for a 5 door hatchback with a decent sized boot
Needs to be reliable and not too expensive to service repair.

Also would there be any saving to be had waiting until January ?
Current car needs a bit of work done to leave it safe for Winter driving so I'd prefer to change but if there was a decent saving to be had I'd wait

Try and sell the Golf privately, it's not going to be worth much to a dealer unless you can get some sort of scrappage scheme against a brand new car.

It'll be sold private/scrapped, and anything I can get for it will just be a bonus.
Budget isn't dependent on on what I get for the Golf

I think Nissan are giving away new cars on scrappage again.

Edit. No mention of it on the site, they're selling ex hire cars for more than they were selling new ones for a few months ago...

Might be a good time to buy a VAG of some sort, with the current uncertainty they might be a bit more eager to do a deal.

Think you're right. Bit more time to haggle a good deal. :D

Back on topic...."I would be looking for a 5 door hatchback with a decent sized boot" only one car fits that description round here. Octavia.

Octavia is too long and too close to a saloon.
I'm looking at the following, anything to avoid, look out for ?
    VW Golf
    Kia Cee'd
    Mazda 3

The newer Kia Ceed isn't all that great a car tbh. The father has one and its ageing terribly.

I'd add a Seat Leon to the list too. Should get a ddecently specced new model in budget.

Test drove a Mazda 3 1.6d the other day.
Apart from some road noise on certain surfaces it was a grand drive.
    Good size boot as well.
The only concern I have is that the average mpg on it was about 48mpg
I would have been expecting slightly more from a newer car ?
Should I expect 50+ doing mixed driving, back roads and some motorway ?

If you started from cold and drove in unideal (dual carriageway, not motorway) conditions, that's not bad, cars mpg improves once they get a few kms on them.

I'd test drive all of them tbh, find something you are comfortable with.

Other cars to look at would be the Toyota Auris, Honda civic, Hyundai i30
