The missus wants Ellie Goulding tickets for Christmas, unfortunately the fecker isn't playing in Ireland so a trip to the UK is on the cards.... Turns out she's playing in March!!

My plan is for us to fly to Birmingham on the 18th (Gold Cup) train to Cheltenham and stay the night before getting a train to Manchester for the gig on the evening of the 19th. I've just searched briefly for a couple of hotels for the 18th in Cheltenham and the cheapest I've come up with for one night is €337!! Anyone any suggestions of something around the €200 mark for the night?

Try the areas around Cheltenham, we normally stay in Birdlip, 15 or so mins from the track. Doubt you'll get anything in the town for near 200

Stay in a B&B for the 18th right next to the track for 125ish and splash out on the honeymoon suite in a hotel after the Manchester gig. There are hotels.com online but they are 15 miles away and sitting in a car in traffic gold cup would be no fun so I'd sacrifice the hotel for a B&B near the track for that night. Enjoy the trip.

I'm trying to stay within taxi range for Cheltenham. Already two train journeys in the 2 days.

Train prices in England are nuts!

    Agreed

    Have you tried split ticketing?

Try Cheltenham to Birmingham then Birmingham to Manchester, you often stay on the same train

I did but not cheaper, looked at buses but doesnt seem to be any. My plan is:

    18th March:
    Flight - Dublin to Birmingham
    Train – Birmingham – Cheltenham

    19th March:
    Train – Cheltenham – Manchester

    20th March:
    Flight – Manchester to Dublin

Think I've finally ironed out the plans! Going to fly to Birmingham on Paddys Day (probably early to be in a bar over there for 1pm), going to get a train to and from Cheltenham on Gold Cup day (only 40 mins and cheap enough) then a direct train up to Manchester from Birmingham. All in all for 2 of us for 3 nights, 3 trains and 2 flights it's costing €440 at an estimate, Manchester hotel is killing it as the Manchester derby is on that day so talking at least €160 a night for a half decent hotel.

Bear in mind the train timetable to/from Cheltenham gets kinda thrown out the window for day tripping to the festival. You get corralled into large queues and should allow plenty of time, especially when leaving Cheltenham. Enjoy!

Planning on around 9/9.30am on the morning of the Gold Cup and then late evening coming back? Still be affected by it? How much longer would you say?
