ESB fighting a losing battle in cork?

You have probably seen the stories ESB are to pay 60% damages forr the serious cork flooding in 2009.
They are appealing the decision and have been arguing that they did all in their power to stop flooding.
I believe this is the case, while structurally the dam was not in danger, the severity of the water gathered behind it could have led to unprecedented flooding, bringing cork city to the point of Atlantis levels of flooding.

To the point. The reason the water levels were so high.
Heavy rainfall that week was one reason but what the ESB, to their utmostly extreme credit honesty have not said is that they were holding back water in order to recover a body from the river of a boy who went missing.
Every night and day people had been on the search down the river and with the weather turning, the ESB did their utmost to assist before the poor unfortunate may have been washed out to sea.

They to their integrity have not named this in their decision and I have utmost respect for this.

This is how commercial company's work. Battle it out for years then pay a reduced fee on the cost.

That's the first I've heard about this, if that was the reason they didn't release the water don't you think it would of been reported to some extent. Where exactly did you hear this?

I remember the flooding well. People were filling their baths with electricity in anticipation of power cuts.

If its true it was a noble yet flawed decision.
Cork flooded, people could have died and millions of euros of damage was caused.

It might sound heartless but it's true.

Blame the planners then for taking away the floodplain at the old dog track where the ucc gateway building now stands or any of the other floodplains that were eaten up by the planning department. Couldn't plan a ****ing piss, let alone a piss up in a brewery.

Would you blame a poor young fella for the damage? How bad would that look ffs? It's lose lose for ESB.

What kind of question is that. Why would anyone blame the flooding on a missing person.

Even though that's a terrible thing and trying to locate a missing body can be a difficult operation. I would still expect someone at the ESB to be able to make the hard call, surely there are safety measure's in place to deal with excessive rainfall and safe release of the water.

I think the head of ESB needs to get off the grid for a while, lay low, let this pass over until it's not current news.

It's not the ESB that's fighting a loosing battle, it's the Irish state, which seems unable to resist the urge to sue itself (or part thereof ). Good time to be a solicitor I guess...

Its esb appealing against the stupidity of ucc, leaving invaluable artwork 2 feet away( and 8 feet under) from a river prone to flooding

    Current affairs, wha'.

I had no water for a week at the time. Here's a pic of the Kingsley Hotel underground underwater car park at the time. I believe that there were a lot of court records destroyed at the time too due to flooding.

I was at the kingsley that noght. Audi had a load of cars for a display in the basement. All ruined. Court was ****ed too dozens of fans and dehumidifiers to dry it out. Did some work in the basement when it was all redone. The kingsley was chaos though and when the army arrived in their super trucks, they did the most damage sending waves of water into homes and offices.

The story is common knowledge in Cork, though I've never seen an official source.
