There's a 52 piece socket set in Lidl tomorrow, anyone get one before? Are they any good?

24 of the pieces are lowest grade screwdriver inserts.
The rest of it would be fine for light use, but I wouldn't buy it for it to be my only socket set.

    Good enough considering the price.

They are not really for everyday use as they are made from poor material. They might get you out of a spot but wouldn't rely on them

Those are impact sockets, so not as handy as 12 point in some situations, but much stronger and less likely to round off nuts.
    No ratchet with it though.

    Not really like-for-like

If you're any way into messing with cars, fixing stuff in the house, taking stuff apart etc the investing €170 or so om the Halfords advanced 200 piece set makes a lot of sense. Comes with spanners, ratchet scanners, 3 ratchets, spark plug sockets, Allen keys, Allen sockets, torx etc etc.

They have a lifetime warranty (bar ratchet mechanisms)

Is the halfords set 6 or 12 point sockets?

Halfords set has both six and twelve point for some sockets, but mostly it's twelve.

+1 for the Halford Pro socket set, have mine now for nearly seven years, broke one of the screw driver bits at the weekend and got it replaced without issue.

Both. You get imperial sockets and a few impact sockets too.

+1 for Halfords sets. My only complaint is the cases can break and the pieces end up rattling around loose in an other toolbox.

This is a comparable set http://www.halfords.ie/motoring-travel/tools-diy/socket-sets/halfords-advanced-professional-36-piece-socket-set-1-4

If the Lidl PowerFix set used the same parts as the WorkZone one I have, they're actually very decent sockets for the price.

OK, I wouldn't be using them every day, but I've yet to be worried that I might break a socket, and the ratchet seems solid.

Screwdriver bits are crap though, and you have to use a stupid little connector to put them onto the end of the screwdriver.

I've a PowerFix socket set and have used it over the last year.

It did the job very well and I'm never worried about it breaking.

The most important thing to keep your socket set in great shape is to have a breaker bar. If you're breaking bolts and nuts with the ratchet spanner then even a good one won't last you long!
