Why arent Gas Stoves more popular

    Hi All,

Moving to a new house and want to install a stove. Its going into a room without a chimney and wont have a fireplace or surround.

We currently have a multifuel stove and love it, but its a pain to clean and light sometimes.

So we thought, why not get a gas fired stove. No mess, instant heat. Ok, they only go to around 5kw, but this is fine.

So why are some places saying they aren't popular and they don't stock them? Are they costing owners a fortune (cant imagine more than throwing logs and briquettes into a stove)?

    Whats the deal?

They aren't very popular because of the amount of ventilation that they require. People think that they are just letting in cold air and letting out warm air. Well that is what is happening with those flue-less type of heaters. That ventilation is an absolute necessity for those heaters. If they do not get that air supply they can and will produce lethal amounts of carbon monoxide.

The amount of this CO needed to kill is relatively minuscule and is measured in the parts per million (ppm). To give you an idea of what we are talking about, 1 ppm is equal to about a cup of water in a 25 meter swimming pool.

Here is a chart describing the effects and sorry for my long-winded explanation. I wanted to get a point across.

I'd say alot of it is to do with people just enjoying a real fire. There's something very satisfying about the real thing. The flames are almost hypnotic. Yes they are messy but can't say i've a problem with that.

Whether stove or open fire I never saw the appeal of gas. It was even one of the things we looked for when buying a house to have a real fireplace and not just a gas one.
