Car insurance for older cars

I just received a renewal quote from FBD which has been my car insurer for 12 years. Somehow this quote is about double that of last year's and that despite the fact that I have never claimed in 12 years and have never had a fine or lost a point on my license :( .

I was prepared for the insurance to be more expensive due to the fact that being a woman doesn't give you a cheaper insurance anymore and that insurances are more expensives in general for reasons that have nothing to do with the road users. I still didn't expect such an increase and decided to shop around.

I have now filled 3 quote requests: AVIVA, its4women...) for nothing as I later learnt that those insurers do not offer quotes for cars over 14 or 15 year old (mine is a 99).

Does anyone know which insurers accept to insure cars that are over 15 year old and which don't?

I do know that the easiest way would normally be to try them all but my WIFI connection is a disaster and it takes me between 3 and 5 attempts before I can send a request. At least I can use Words and copy paste to write on boards.ie ;)

Thanks in advance for any answer.

I tried 123 first. They told me they can not give me a quote because of some informations I entered in my request. They refuse to tell me which :( (I contacted them by chat . It is so frustrating!

Could the car have been a writeoff previously?

I don't think so! I insured it last year without any problem.

Fbd did the same to me last month, €330 3rd party last year, €970 this year! Ended up ringing Bank of Ireland insurance and they did it for about €390. Keep ringing around!

I'll do that. I contacted FBD and they confirmed that there is nothing wrong with my insurance (except for the price:) ). I was worried that someone might have claimed against me:eek:.

A friend of mine (supposed to know a bit about what happens in FBD) told me that FBD has decided to be more of a farmer's insurer again and is moving away from insuring cars only (they would be prioritizing insuring cars as part of a package only).

Last year my car insurance was slightly Under 300, this year they quoted 560 something in their renewal letter and when I called them today "due to the fact that I have been insured with them for so long and have never claimed" they offered to reduce that quote to 465! I just contacted my partner's insurance and they offer 356 :) . I will make a few more calls tomorrow but at least now I know that I won't have to pay more than 560! It doesn't seem to make much commercial sense for an insurer to get rid of customers who never claimed though.

€356 sounds good, bearing in mind you were expecting a price increase.

It's funny how you people think insurance is expensive... I got quoted for 211 euors a month for a 1.6 and that was the cheapest one. Other companies don't want to insure me. I would be happy to get an insurance for just half of that price

Oh and I have my license for almost 10 years...

You are posting across multiple threads and forums.

The fact of the matter is you have no driving experience in Ireland, no ncb and you want to insure a Porsche.

You are beyond high risk for insurance companies.

All you can do is insure a more realistic car and build up your ncb.

    Look Asmooh,

its one of the realities of moving to Ireland. There are very nice things about it and there are not so nice things about it.
Your case may seem unfair and there's certainly no common sense in it and you could think yourself in a rage over it. I'm from Germany myself and I won't even go there counting up all the ways its makes no sense at all. You will find a fifty year old farmer who on observation shouldn't be left on the road at all paying 300 for his massive BMW while you the ten times better and more experienced driver can't get quote at all. Motor insurance here is not based on common sense its a crazy little numbers game in a world of its own and your particular case and the car you want don't fit. Its just one of those more maddening oddities of the Irish motoring reality. I feel for you but I'm afraid it is what it is. You can accept it and get on with your life or sit in a corner crying.

I have a 98 ford fiesta just passed the nct two months ago. i have been driving over 15 years not a single claim or crash. full no claims bonus. full driving for over 20 years. my insurer won't quote me anymore. now i have a car that is nct looks great outside in driveway but is of no use to me.. so why did the government still sending me out tax form to tax it. and nct reminders.
May i make a sudgestion to anyone who finds themselfes in same position as i am now in. we drive our cars down to minister for transport office park them in street all at one time and put the keys in his letterbox. i will do this who will follow me. my car is taxed nct but i cant use it. we have to make them accountable no one else will

Your current insurer has to quote you.

    Legally, they are obliged to.

You will have to go down the declined cases route (google declined cases committee for exactly how to do it) and they will likely put substantial increases on the premium but they will be forced to quote if you cannot get another company to do so.
