How long does it generally take to receive the vehicle registration cert?

Wife picked up her new car 10 days ago. Dealer told her that the VRC would be issued the following week but it hasn't been received yet. From previous expierence it doesn't take this long. She can't tax the car until it has been changed to her ownership so she's apprehensive driving it without a tax disc.

I know it comes from Shannon but I taught it was all done online by the dealer & was a fairly quick process?

Last car I bought took over 2 weeks which was a month ago. Just give it some time.

You can check online if they have changed it over that way you know they got it. Usually a few days after that you should have it.

You can track the chNge of ownership on www.motortax.ie

You can also see if it was transferred into a dealers name in the last 3 months. If it hasn't, then there's a chance they don't have the vrc and didn't send it off.

Did you see/sign the vrc cert, or did they tell you they changed it electronically?

This isn't a brand new car is it?

Bought a used car a month ago, it only took 3 days for the logbook to arrive. Dealer notified Shannon online of the change of ownership.

    Stick the registration here, https://www.motortax.ie/PSE
it'll tell you whether Shannon has been notified of the change.

It's a new car. I checked there & did transfer into a dealers name earlier this year. I didn't physically see the VRC, my wife said when she was picking up the car, she gave him the VRC from our old car. He then did an online transaction & gave a receipt for change of ownership for our old car. Then said the VRC for the new car would be issued the following week

Brand new car that's been registered to your wife first before anyone else?

If that's the case then the VLC doesn't get issued until the car is taxed

Can tax it online with the reg and password is the last 6 digits of the chassis number

If it's a new car then there wouldn't have been a VRC.

It's not a few months old/ex demo/ex hire is it?

New car would be one that was first registered in your wife's name, with no previous owners etc.

It's new but an ex hire car, there was 5,000km on the clock when we got it

    Got ya.
For the purposes of this, it's not new.

I'd get back on to the garage. Tell them you contacted the vroom in Shannon and they told you no change of ownership was done electronically.

Also mention that you are taking the m50 toll daily and haven't been paying for it ;)

Shannon have a habit of losing them in the post. Never received my at all and on contacting them I was told to report it lost and pay for a replacement.

This seems to have been an electronic transfer rather than post.

There can be a bit of a mess dealing with these nearly new cars. Depending on why the car was registered originally - hire car, demo, pre reg, there may be a situation where dealer wants to hold vrc for 3 months from original reg date.
Parents bought a pre reg zero mile car in 2012 and dealer wanted to hold cert so that they could claim a demo allowance on it.

    Hire drives are different usually.

Can you explain how they are different? I've just (unknowingly:mad:) bought an ex-hire car and have been waiting patiently for two weeks now for the logbook.

Would it not leave a huge problem if you has to make an insurance claim on a car not in your name when you actually bought the car?

It shouldn't as what matters according to insurers terms and conditions is ownership (they say car is owned by you).
You become owner at the moment you purchase the car.
Registration of ownership with Shannon might take a while, but it doesn't mean you are not the owner in the mean time.

Yes that's fine if they back date it to when you bought it but if they don't, what happens when?

If you bought it from the garage, you have the dated invoice which proves exactly when you became the owner.

As in they're more straightforward. You shouldn't be waiting.
Lazy admin is probably the reason.
