Hi, I am finding it hard to get an insurance quote, on a 97 corolla. I'm 19 with a provisional with 1 years no claims and hoping to get full license in the next month.
I rang AIB and they refused to quote me saying my car is a japanese import, as far as I know its an UK import manufactured in Japan. Though through thier website I can get the quote and get as far as paying for it which I haven't done yet. Do you think I could get insured through the website even though over the phone they wouldn't ?

No chance of anyone insuring you online, you will need to call them.

They seem happy enough to take my money online though

Your best bet is to ask a broker for a quote. You are 19 with a learners permit trying to get insurance on a JDM car. Expect to pay a LOT.

Yeah I think i'll talk to a broker, see I'm not sure my car is a JDM, it was manufactured in Japan but I think it was first registered in the UK

There are three types of Toyotos

Direct imported to Ireland or UK Toyotos for sale in Japan made to Japanese specs and not to EU specs .
Direct imported to ireland or UK Toyotos for sale in Uk or Ireland specs are to EU specs
manufatuered in UK or EU Toyotos made for sale in all EU and made to EU specs

Most imports from Japan are the first type and private byers import them into UK and Ireland

many moons ago all Toyotos were made in Japan and all Toyotas were imports .

Now most Toyotos are UK made .

There is small chance yours isnt a jap import to japanese specs but not a big chance.
Thge japanese import car are probaly far better than UK built cars but the EU doesnt want imports driving on european roads so they get the EU to make all sorts of new rules to make it difficult to own and drive .
Its nearly impossible at any kind of normal economic price outside ireland and the UK to import the japanese cars .
PM me if your thinking to sell it

Quick pump up the flatplanet before we fall over the edge !!!

Thanks for the information! Yeah I may have to sell if I want anyway a decent priced insurance. It would be a pity, I've only had the car a month under my current insurance which is up on Friday.

Why don't you just renew with your current insurer?

They're all going to be expensive.

My current insurer is raising the price of my insurance by 1000 which I can't justify paying... I might stay off the road until I pass my test

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Really - it's just arbitrarily raising it 1000 for no reason?

Nasty one alright, What changed over the year to warrant such an increase?

I sold my 01 focus and bought the corolla... Though to renew with the focus it was going up 600 so still a huge increase. No change apart from that

can we ask what it was before the increase? presumably somewhere north of 2K?

It was 2.2k which for my first insurance on a provisional license I thought was very good

so they wanted to put it up by 600 which is 27% or so. Insurance rates are going up all round so the increase isnt madly out of line. You have made a rod for your own back by switching though. firstly because it is (possibly) a JDM and also because its a few years older than the other car. insurance companies seems to be really jacking up prices for cars 14+ years old.

Well I wasnt going to insure the focus again because it wasn't worth trying to put through the nct. I just can't believe its dearer with the 1 year ncb.

The online quotes have what they call assumptions somewhere on the page, you must read these before taking out a policy as if the find you have not informed them of something then they can refuse to pay out in the event of a claim or cancel your policy. Every company is diffrent but some of the assumptions are that the car is not an import(japanese or UK) and that it is not modified.

    Yeah it does

Could very well be a jdm model.

Online quotes are usually only temporarily valid as well. The quote is manually checked and they can easily revoke it. They can't deny cover in the interim but just because a quote is given and paid for online, is no gaurentee of the insurance standing once manually checked.
