Would you use 2x1 or 2x2? Airtight membrane in the warn side of joists already. My instinct is 2x2 will allow additional insulation and no need for penetrations in membrane for electrics in the future...

Picture yourself having to fish a wire through the cavity and ask yourself which one you'd go for. Apart from that it's what your can afford or can lose in space IMHO
