Free Travel Passes For Syrians

I was in the Intreo centre in Limerick with my elderly mother as part of upgrading her travel pass card.

While there, there was a bunch of Syrians, they were being assisted by two Iraqi chaps. I was speaking to one about the Syrian situation. Harsh stuff. Very harsh stuff. In any event, one of the officers approached him to organise the group into two Q's, one of which was for the travel pass cards.

I was looking for information on this publicly, and could not find any. I wonder does anyone know what the scheme is to help these people (welfare wise)?

The same as everyone else if they come through offical channels if there granted rights to be here
    Jobseekers ,
    Disability ,
    Pension ,

Once there fast tracked and granted asylum they get full access to social welfare and any other benefits such as medical cards and rent supplement

Information you are seeking is here:
Rights conferred on Convention refugees, Programme refugees and people given leave to remain

They weren't getting free travel passes they were being given PSCs.
your inaccurate posting here is just the type of thing that helps create urban myths which encourage the festering of resentment and hostility.
Only certain SW payments trigger entitlement to Free Travel

Let's not let reality get in the way of urban myths :)

Haveringchick, retract that. I abhor that entirely. I am in no way trying to foster resentment. I was there. I heard it with my own ears. Clearly and unequivocally. The chap at Hatch 12 if you work there (I think it was 12; basically the one to the left if I've the number wrong).

He specifically said the young girl on the hatch next to him was dealing with the travel passes only and asked yerman to organise the group. There were a couple of them ahead of my mother. Bar physically sitting in on each meeting, the Syrians were getting Travel passes processed. Given the number of them, I thought perhaps this was part of a scheme we'd put in place.

This member of staff is a senior member of staff. I'd say he knows what he's at, so I am satisfied it is not misinformation. In any event, the point is interest in published information sourcing re what we are doing to help these people (welfare wise). Let's not go the route you want to go, that's disgusting in terms of a post, particularly if you are a public service employee. Please retract it.

PSC are done in Parnell street. A friend of mine got hers in Parnell street. Free travel is done in Dominic street she got her free travel card there

Entitlement to free travel is nowadays evidenced by producing a Public Services Card which is marked to show that the bearer is eligible for free travel. TThere are still plenty of existing free travel passes in use and they remain valid, but I think any person newly-qualifying for free travel will be isssued with a suitably-marked PSC, not a Free Travel Pass. Marked PSCs may sometimes be referred to, casually, as "free travel cards" or "free travel passes", which can cause confusion.

Refugees are entitled to free travel on the same basis as Irish citizens. Therefore not all refugees get free travel; they get free travel if an Irish citizen in the same circumstances would get free travel. Presumably, if the organiser was being asked to sort the refugees into two queues, one of the queues was for refugees qualifying for free travel and the other for refugees not qualifying for free travel.
