What would volunteer work in an addiction centre involve?

I'm currently doing an applied social studies course and from this course I plan on becoming an addiction counsellor. I am a recovering alcoholic (17 months sober) so although I feel my personal experience might be valuable in the field of addiction treatment I don't know what to expect if I do get work in a treatment…

If anyone has done work placement or voluntary work in drug and alcohol treatment I would be very grateful to hear what your experience was like.
