    Hi all

We have a gas fire which we would like to replace with a stove (photo attached). We have received a quote for €800 to remove the existing gas fire, supply and fit an inset stove. However, another supplier has told us this is not possible and we need to replace the whole unit and a new surround at a cost of €3,200. We are a bit lost at this stage and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in a similar situation - Gas inset fire, ornate cast iron grate, tiles

The wife refuses to lose her tiles!

Given that the hood looks to be part of the fireplace, it does look like the whole lot would need to be replaced. If it wasnt, I dont think you would be happy with the result

an inset stove like a stanley cara would look nice there I reckon. but just to buy it would be about 1250. The 800 price must be for a cheap stove.

The problem you probably have (very common) is that the new-ish HETAS guidelines require a large distance, about 500mm, from the top of the stove to the bottom of the timber surround.
