Chain snap causes

Just got biked serviced - new cassette, chain, cables and housings. Done about 50kms on it and chain snapped this morning. Dropped it into the same place the service was done for diagnosis and wondering what the likely outcomes could be - is this common would I expect a 9sp shimano chain to be this bad (I have had 2 or 3 of the same Ultegra 9sp chains on, but this is my first new cassette and first chain snapping!)

Edit - by snap I mean there was a whole pin attached but the connecting metal was bent out - kinda like this:

Brand new chain snapping after 50km was incorrectly installed. Simple as.

Easy enough to do, even if you attach 100 chains a week, you're likely to have one or two duds in your time.

I suspected as much.. but didnt want to call them out on it without checking..!

I wasn't cross chaining or anything.. in fact I don't think I have been in the wrong gear once since it was done as I have been enjoying having a full range back!

now.. is it an easy repair - can a link be added back on etc or do I need a new chain?

Cross-chaining would make no odds, you'd have to damage the chain with a hard impact to make it fail after 50km.

It's potentially an easy fix, but if the chain is already as short as it can be and they have no suitable spare links lying around, it'll need to be a new chain.

erm not 100% but dont think so - I was taking off from lights alright but quite sure I kept same middle gear..

(And I aint no where near powerful enough to snap a chain!!)

Is there a split link on the chain at all?
It's unlikely your bike shop was fiddling with any other link than that so a bit unfair to be blaming the guy who fitted it unless it broke at the split link.
I had a chain that broke twice on me after small mileage for no apparent reason at different links. It wasn't ultegra fwiw but it was just a faulty chain.

ye - not looking to blame or anything.. just trying to understand! - bike shop was cool - I offered to pay but they refused so all ok in the end

The only one that I had that had broken after so few miles was one where I put in the chain breaker gave it a twist, and had second thoughts, which caused a slightly stiff link. I freed it up by manipulating the pin a bit with the chain tool, but the 2nd or 3rd time I stood up and mashed on a climb it snapped

If anyone asks tell them the bike shop said you're too powerful for the chain
