They used to do the route with an all Business Class configuration on the A340-500. 19 hours in standard economy wouldn't be great but, at least it's faster than splitting it into two flights with a short layover.

19 hours in economy would still be a tough enough. I used to think the flight from heathrow to vancouver was too long for economy - to paraphrase Danny Glover: "i'm too old for this sh*t". Well it was BA so the economy was not too bad. I assume Singapore and Qantas would have good economy classes - i'd hate to think what a 19 hour flight in any north american airline would be like (if they where ever to attempt it).

I flew economy with SIA a fews years back, 777. I would regard it as the best I have flown in.

Hence the constant positioning of SQ in the "top 3 airlines in the world" rankings.

I doubt that the 787-900 can do this with a full load, so they could install a unique interior with less seats in line with the payload, but to make it viable most of these seats would have to be business. Very similar to Singapore's A345 to the USA.

They can do Sydney to Dallas, 13,800kms in 14 hours but 14,000kms will take 19 hours? Am I reading that right? A380 v 787 cruise speed is?

"QANTAS plans to offer a 19 hour non-stop flight between Perth and London within two years, to become the longest commercial flight in the world.Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said the airline had plans to fly the 14,000 kilometre route between Australia and the UK by 2017 using its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner"

"Qantas currently flies the world’s longest route on its Sydney to Dallas-Fort Worth leg, covering 13,800km in around 14 hours"

That last 5 hours/200km will be a killer!!

It might have been before the resources sector tanked. Would be surprised to see it now.

Would you be looking at 3 flight crews for a 19 hour flight or how would that work?

Sydney to Dallas is eastbound and hence with prevailing tailwinds. Perth to London is the opposite. So the no-wind route would be around 16-16.5 hours.

Some calculations on airliners.net are quite revealing. The SIA A359-ULR will be able to fly 170 passengers on this route with less than half the fuel-burn-per-seat of the A345. Amazing progress in 15 years.

Just a pity it doesn't fly at Mach 3...

Double crew, called "Heavy crew" usually. Each airline may differ but usually 1 crew does take-off, first 1/4 of journey, rest. Then does last 1/4 of flight, approach and landing. The 2nd flight crew handle the cruise. Another option of 2 do the first half, while 2 do the second half.
