Anyone know how much a new landrover headgasket is to get repaired, would 500 do it, also with the modified head gasket are they reliable, I would have thought the later engines would roll out with the newer head gasket, but.. I know nothing about these, anyone got experience of owning a late 04/05 one.

Seems like crazy money for a model with thehead gasket gone and no tax or test. I wouldn't offer half that. You'd easy pick up a tested, driving example for close to his asking.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/view/10149348 as an example.

In answer to your question, you could probably get the head gasket replaced for under €500, but it wouldn't be the best of jobs for that kind of money and then could you ever really relax in a car known to give head gasket trouble that's had a cheap reapir done.

Iirc the upgraded MLS gasket from landrover and the full engine gasket kit is close to €200, then you have a timing kit to buy, water pump, full service kit too and get the head skimmed, so you are looking at more like €500 in parts.

If I got the car for €750, i'd consider it, because even if you spend €800 fixing the head gasket it could still fail the NCT on anything else. You are taking all the risk so you shouldn't have to pay top dollar too. All that said, they are decently reliable when the upgraded gasket is fitted, if a bit thirsty.

I was thinking the same, would definitely not be purchasing for the asking price, if I bought one that was fine I'd still think the HG was a ticking time bomb, unless already done.

That'd be the way to view it, if buying one of those, i'd always factor it into the purchase price. It'd probably be a bit cheaper if you were to replace the gasket on a car that was running good to as you could save on a head skim and may not need to immediately replace the oil/ coolant etc.

These are very thirsty,i had one a few years ago.People 'convert' them to 2 wheel drive also so watch for that.Personally i would want that for half whats being asked and as already said to do the hg properly would cost €800+.

Are they mad thirsty, would you see 250 - 300 miles out of a tank, I could live with that, as its going to have a fairly easy life.

A friend was considering buying a 2005 one of these from a garage in Cork, apparently VGC, less mils than that one and NCT until Jan 16 with garage assuring an NCT pass, €1800 iirc and the particular garage is very reputable.

You often can pick up slightly older 1.8 rav4s for €1200-1500
