Looking for advice on buying a cheap van as a runaround. About 2000 to spend. Was looking at the likes of Berlingo or something that size. Anything to stay away from? Also with a Berlingo 1.9 or 1.6 hdi your experience please

Both engine types on those berlingos are terrible, the berlingos full stop are a heap of shite.

    Don't buy a berlingo.

Transit connect would be a good shout.

    Pros's
    -Bigger load capacity than most
    -Decent power
    -Reasonable to drive

    Con's
    -Feels cheaper than a caddy
-Can hear fuel sloshing around alot if full/window seals leak at times

id recommend a berlingo if you got a good one that was minded. Good value for money vans. cheap motoring. not much to go wrong with the 1.9s except they are slow

Transit connects for that money will be falling apart with rust.

Transit connects are another crock of shit.

Any Berlingo with the newer 1.6 HDI for 2k is probably a dog.

Maybe have a look at the Opel/Vauxhall Combo 1.7 CDTi or Renault Kangoo.

Maybe suggest something instead of slating everything ?

Nobody's suggested a polo with a cube stuck on the back yet.

Personally at the OP's budget i would go for an Inca (Seat platform of old caddy) over a caddy as it has slightly more load bay.

Tragically dated but i guess it is a van at the end of the day, and for the love of GOD dont get an SDI

Rust is a problem with those though. The sills and along the sides are prone to it.

Most vans are the same tbh, it's because of the way they are manufactured in a more basic way, many have little or no clearcoat either and cans tend to get wetter than cars in certain forms of use.

I made my suggestion to the op, the berlingos, connects, incas and caddys are all dogs of yolks. Unless the op ups his budget its not possible to make a good recommendation.

    Weren't incas all sdi?

Yep, Inca was only every sold with the SDi engine here. Solid reliable engine but you'd walk faster than it's top speed.

Are the 1.9 really that bad. I would be doing a bit of driving on motorway so would like a bit of go in it. Are the1.6 any quicker

People are being way over the top with the speed issue on non turbo vans. I've a work sdi caddy and it'll get to and sit at 140 on the motorway. I'm up and down motorways all day.

My own car is an s80 so its not like I'm comparing it to a micra.

I've had the 1.9xud in a partner and an expert in the past and it was fine too as well as the bonus of being ultra reliable.

We're talking about vans here, nobody is looking for a racecar.

You would get a very good Scudo for that budget.

Head gaskets blowing left right and centre, back axle bushings failing, clutch cables snapping sure make them reliable for sure.

So the OP should walk then.

+1. It may be a little dated but it's miles ahead of everything else in terms of build and reliability. They don't rust badly either like some of the other vans do.

I've a transit connect now. Previous was a doblo cargo and then a berlingo. The connect would be my favourite and I'll be getting another one next year hopefully.

    Wheelbarrow maybe ?

I've driven an SDI before -not fast but nothing wrong with it either - heard they're a more reliable engine than Tdi,( pure hearsay though )
