    Probably asked a hundred times before but how long do people leave as a rule of thumb for connecting flights?

    We have a couple of internal flights in America coming up with a lay over of 40 minutes for one and 45 minutes for another... Which thinking about it is probably the time between landing and takeoff (as opposed to gate closing?). Have I been over-ambitious in squeezing them in? Any opinions appreciated! (*No kids in tow thankfully)

    Seems quite short. May be a good idea to check with the airlines involved and see what they recommend.

    There is no 'rule of thumb' because there are several variables in every case such as (1) whether you have to change terminal when making the connection (2) general size of the airport and whether there is an efficient shuttle between the terminals (3) whether you have to do immigration on arrival or (4) collect bags or (5) check-in bags etc. etc.

    So I looked into it a bit more, I'm with American for both flights with the connections in Dallas and Charlotte. In Charlotte all the American gates appear to be in one stretch and Dallas split between two so will just have to hope we have seats near the front of the plane and that the gates come out close.

    Both domestic-domestic flights (no immigration or re-security or anything) and both will have bags checked (that hopefully we'll see at the other end).

    It seems like at the worst if we miss the connection we should find it ok to be bumped to a later one as they are midday midweek flights and all booked together on one ticket.

    Charlotte shouldn't be a problem but Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) is a huge airport, one of the biggest in the world so be sure to tell the clerk when you're checking in for the first leg that you have a connection though if it's on the same ticket that will be visible anyway. They will give you a boarding card for the second leg and hopefully put you in a seat that will allow you to deplane first.
