    HI All,

Ken Rockwell just reviewed this lens here http://www.kenrockwell.com/tokina/24-70mm-f28.htm

It is optically superb, better than Canon's 24-70/2.8 L (2002-2012), the same as Nikon's 24-70/2.8 G (2007-2015), and almost as good as Canon's stunning 24-70/2.8 L II (2012-). However, this Tokina's autofocus isn't as fast and you will hear a small motor running while it works.

I am in the market for the 24-70. Have a 20mm 2.8 not getting any use, and like wise a 24-85 on its way out. So the 24-70 would tick a lot of boxes.

Any thoughts on this Tokina, Ken claims its as good as Nikons but its about half the price. Haven't see it hit Amazon uk yet.

Would you go for it or save the money for the Nikon equivalent?

    VC

I have the Nikon 24/70 f2.8 and it's sort of my default lens. It's well built and the AF is definitely good. Have not seen the Tonika to compare.

    I use this on a D800 or D600.

There are more things to consider than just the optical specs. As long as there isn't unpleasant distortion or is very soft (most modern offerings are fine) then the other factors come into play.

The Nikon lens is in their Pro Series. It is weather proof and the operation is solid. It will take a bit of punishment. How does the Tonika compare?

If this is going to be your walk around lens then build quality will probably be important, factor it into your equation. Having not seen the Tonika I cannot compare them.

Thanks for that. I'll have a read into it. I used the Nikon one for about an hour previously and loved it. I liked how it was all self contained ie no size change when zooming. It was heavy but quality. I'll look into the weather proofing piece

I can't offer any thoughts on the specific lense but I've borrowed a Tokina 11-16 for use with my Nikon (D90) and I found the build quality to be very pleasing. It seems robust and to my very amateur eye the picture quality was the same/better than the Nikon lenses (15-200 & 18-105) I am used to.

Would have no problem buying a Tokina based on my experience with this one - it's a good few years old now and still working well.

    It's on the wish list!

Ah don't be putting any stock in what Ken Rockwell says at all - he's for comedic value more than anything. He writes off all Sigma and Tamron lenses as junk - absolute nonsense and he's inconsistent.

That said that tokina looks interesting, i think this is a more reliable review from the guys at lensrentals, and it is worth looking at in comparison to the tamron 24-70, which has VC that the tokina does not:

It also might be worth waiting until there are more user reviews as there is very little real life info out there
