Vw Passat emissions

I have a 2001 1.6 petrol B5 Passat and it recently failed Nct on emissions.
High idle limit is 0.30% and I got 0.52%

I have been told by different mechanics that it could be the catalic converter or it
Could be an air leak somewhere.
Was also told to put a half bottle of diptane through it and drive it to an emission test with the engine piping hot.
Done this today and emissions were at 0.63% which is even higher than before.
Any suggestions before I go spending a fortune on a brand new cat converter?
Any help would be much appreciated

First step would be to take car on a test drive with a suitable scantool and log the fuel trim data for your car. This information will be essential in diagnosing the high carbon monoxide levels in your exhaust gas. Can you upload the emissions data on the NCT failure sheet and we may be able to help you out further. Please note that you may not have to replace the CAT and that there are in my experience many garages who use this as a default option when it comes to tackling emissions related problems, when it could be as simple as a leaking rubber vacuum hose casuing the issue...

I am not able to upload a photo of it but it sad high idle co2 0.52% vol , engine oil temp level was at 110 degrees so engine was pretty hot.. I have a mechanic that's gonna look over it and see if there is an air leak and hopefully will not need a cat
