Going the Distance - Looking for a Diesel Auto

    Hi lads,

Having purchased a house in Trim recently, I'm really putting miles on the auld Avensis which is serving me very well... except for my pocket. Between €65 and €70 a fill is giving me just under 700KM per tank (it's not too large) which is good for a petrol at 7.2 L/100KM but I'm going to need more since I'm averaging up to 40,000KM a year.

We have a child (nearly 2 years old) so car is always full and am looking for some recommendations. Want to head the automatic route with a diesel. Engine size is fine really as long as it's emissions based tax up to 2.5. What can people recommend? Need a big boot / interior space so along the lines of Passat, Santa Fe (we both like these) etc. and reliable of course. Budget is up around 10K (will likely be trading in the Avensis). Also, personal caveat is not to be a bare bone spec. Cheers!

You may not save much on fuel by going into heavy diesel + torque converter auto route when you have good consumption for avensis.

I am in same boat with you moved away from city and commuting everyday. I can't justify changing my focus petrol automatic averaging 8.5-9 lt/100 km for saving on fuel only. It is either manual+diesel+lighter car or diesel+single/dual clutch automatic gearbox+lighter car for me to justify.

a 2.0 tdi dsg passat estate or 2.4 diesel volvo v70 may suit space ans comfort wise.

What about a Mondeo IV with powershift and the 2.0TDCI?
Easy enough on fuel, big boot, hatchback option and estate if you need a lot of space?

You won't better or even match your current figures in a Santa Fe anyway.

Realistically if the 7.2 L/100KM is accurate you won't see much improvement from any auto diesel that's in the size ballpark you require imo.

By much I mean better than 10%, although that 10% coupled with the cheaper diesel price at the pump over 40k kms isn't insignificant it certainly isn't a heap of cash either.

Is the auto a must have? That will limit your choices big time.

Maybe a crossover like a qashqai type thing, or a small mpv like a touran would fit the bill too?

Auto isn't essential really, 6 speed if manual would be nice. Checking out Qashquis too (do like them). How do the 1.5 DCI fair? Friend had one and ruined it going to the village and back 10 times a day (told her about the EGR needing motorway speeds for at least 10 minutes to clear it out).
