Hi ,This Is my first post and I know there are a few threads on this already ,but I am still confused (or stupid) 😄I want to buy a 06 or 07 A4 2 litre diesel Do all these engines regardless of code , have the balance shaft etc problems and either need to be modified or you can expect a very costly repair .I have phoned a few people selling these and to be told , it's the bre engine that's ok it's the brd engine etc . I would welcome any info from some lads here who know a lot more than I do about this. Thanks .

Neither of them are completely ok, but one is worse than the other.

BLB engine has the troublesome chain drive for the balance shaft and also has the poorly designed oil pump drive inside the balance shaft assembly.

BRE engine has the reliable gear drive setup in place of the chain but still has the oil pump drive issue.

A lot of these will have had the problem sorted by now so check the history of any potential purchases.

George, thanks very much for your reply.
That clears up a lot of my questions .It just seemed confusing with the different engine codes and what engines were better than others etc.. Thanks again
