Heart Rate during Marathon

    I'm just looking back over my HR during the last few weeks of training that I have done for Dcm and I was wondering if anybody could share how their HR was during a marathon.

    For example, what was your HR at PMP for shorter runs? What was your average HR during the marathon? Did you 'hit the wall' having ran at this HR?

    Hoping it will help me decide what time/pace to go for :D

    Do you know your resting and max HR?

    Unfortunately the wall has nothing to do with your HR and effort level it is related to your fueling and glycogen depletion. As long as the training has been sufficient and you are not running too hard to early should be fine.

    For a marathon your HR will be a bit higher due to cardiac drift so your runs at MP for up to 10 miles atleast will be lower than at same effort on the day.

    Plenty use running by HR as a guide on the day and to be honest it is not a bad idea especially for the first 20 mile and then see how you feel.

    My max HR is about 190 and my resting HR about 40 (seen as low as 36, sometimes 45)

    The highest HR I ever averaged in a marathon was 171. It wasn't my fastest marathon but the one where I came closest to running at my full potential at the time (I really really REALLY wanted it that day). That one was an outlier though, usually if I tried running that hard I'd blow up.

    My more usual average HR for a marathon is around 165.

    My HR for PMP training runs would be lower - around 160, no higher than 162 or so.

    P.S. I almost always run with an HRM both in training and racing but I do not use the HR to pace myself. I used to but by now I have a decent enough feel for my body not to need the watch any more.
