I currently have a second van that is classed as private. I have been taxed as sole trader. I have to pay a LOT of tax. Am I paying too much? Is there a way to cut down on the tax as it is killing me and I will have to take this van out and sell it.

If you're a sole trader why would you have a van that's privately taxed (regardless of your uses for it)?

According to tax office must be private tax. I am a year sole trader. What am I missing here?

You must have specifically told them you were using it for personal use and not for commercial use?

Surely you can tax it as a commercial from here on in. Just say it's needed as part of your business to transport goods or such..?
