Any help would be appreciated. I had it in my head to buy a cross bike for winter training the Tcx slr2.but now some of the lads in the club have asked me is it worth my while ,will I get the use from it,what good is it in the summer. To make it more complicated the LBS have shown me a 2015 TCR Advanced 2 and will give it to me for the same as the TCX €1399.I have a Defy 1 which I think is too good to use as a winter bike if I get the TCR, but I've never had a Carbon bike and it looks Amazing. Thanks in advance

Seriously, my cx bike is the best cycling purchase I have made, love going out on it at all times of the year.

Thanks Colm18.I think cross is really going to take off and I think I would feel better cycling on that during winter but the TCR is so tempting

    Do you road race?

If no, get a cross bike.

If yes, get a cross bike.

You have a defy 1 which is a fine road bike, why have 2 fine road bikes?

I built up a winter road bike, but to be honest I just ride my cross bike everywhere, it's way more versatile. It's nice being able to dip in and out of trails and parks on the way home rather than taking the road everywhere, but it's plenty fast on the road for a road spin too.

Thanks Comete looks like cross is the sensible choice, does the extra bike weight make much difference

I'm 85kgs, bike weight is not my biggest concern

FWIW I strongly disagree with the choice of a cross bike for the road. I've owned a couple.

They are heavy, the mechanical disc brakes (on that Giant) are dead feeling and agricultural, the geometry makes them feel tippy and less responsive than a proper road bike, the descending is mediocre and they're less practical than a proper winter road bike with full mudguards.

You can never have too many road bikes.

Well, thanks for the replies but I've gone with the Tcr. I might be able to Squeeze a set of 28mm tyres on to my old Peloton

Good choice. Now sell the defy and buy a cross bike as well! :)

I have to say I'm really really enjoying my cx bike. Threw road wheels on it the weekend and did 100k to Laragh and back over the two gaps. Great bike. Really solid, great ride quality, rides bumps better than anything. Only thing it's lacking is gears over 50kph, but that's liveable-with. Being carbon probably helps the comfort factor, I'd like to put carbon stem and bars on it to take some harshness out of the cockpit but other than that it's shaping up to be an absolutely crackin winter / crosser / turbo /do-it-all bike.

I really wanted a CX bike but I don't trust myself to put in the effort in the cold mornings. At least I know I'll use the Tcr from spring onwards and maybe I might sell the defy and buy a second hand cx bike. sounds like a plan. Thanks fat bloke:cool:
