The annual Millfield tournament is this weekend, in Street in Somerset.

St Benildus have two teams, and Gonzaga have one, possibly two teams.

After the first day, it's looking good for an Irish double - Gonzaga and St Benildus are both 3/4 points clear in their respective sections (Championship and Major). St Benildus picked up 11½/12 in one of the rounds today.

The final three rounds are tomorrow.

    Gonzaga A 18.5 (9.5, 9)
    Manchester Grammar 14.5 (5, 9.5)
    QE Barnet 12.5 (6.5, 6)
    RGS Guilford 12 (7.5, 4.5)
    Haberdashers' 9.5 (5, 4.5)

    Cdeb,
    Very good round for Benildus.
Have you a very experienced lineup this year and were you far off qualifying for the top section? 11.5/12 is a very impressive score in any competition.
Impressive going for Gonzaga having graduated a lot of strong players last year. Excellent to see Irish juniors doing well.

Don't know how far we were off qualifying for the top section.

We'd have two players we could add to them team out there (1400 and 1000), but other than that, a full team I think.

    Championship after Round 4:
    Gonzaga 35.5
    Manchester Grammar 26
    RGS Guilford 24.5
    QE Barnet 24
    Haberdashers' Aske's 23
    St. Olaves 11

Just as notable as the team results has been FM Conor O'Donnell's. Conor has beaten FM Andrew Horton (2313 MGS) and FM Ravi Haria (2445 Habs) to move to 6/6 on Board 1 in the toughest section I've ever seen.

    Major after Round 4:
    St. Benildus A 42.5
    Millfield 37
    Winchester 33.5
    Gonzaga B 31
    Torquay 26.5
    QE Barnet B 20
    Coláiste Eanna A 17.5
    St. Benildus B 6.5
    Coláiste Eanna B 1.5

One more round to play. It could be a great day for the Irish schools.

Good to see Colaiste Eanna involved, who weren't active in schools chess when I was playing circa 10 years ago. Is that a sign chess among junior players is growing?

LSCA have done a good job of getting more schools involved and increasing the number of primary schools also playing.
I think this is the second year that Colaiste Eanna have entered Milfield.
Blackrock College, Colaiste Eoin and Enniscorthy are new teams in the secondary schools competition in recent years, whilst Castleknock, Gonzaga, St. Benildus and St. Kieran's have been mainstays.

Any confirmation on Gonzaga and St Benildus doing the double after the last round this afternoon?

Gonzaga have retained their Millfield crown, haven't heard word yet on the Major section. Hoping Benildus made it a double

They did. Very assured performance by Benildus as well as Gonzaga.

Gonzaga won the Championship by a comfortable (and surprising) 8 points to become the first Irish team to put back to back victories together in Millfield.

Conor O'Donnell scored an outrageous 7/7 and won a board prize on Board 1, best U18 and the Stephen Joseph Memorial trophy (best tournament performance). Past winners of this award include Sam Collins, Mark Quinn, Brian Kelly and even Michael Adams. Pretty good company.

St. Benildus put in a crushing 52/60 to win the Major section and this probably indicates that they were too good for this section as I've never seen such a high score for a team. They must have been unlucky in qualifying. Still a super clinical performance and indicative of a strong team. Congratulations to Frank Scott et al.

Great result, especially for Gonzaga who had a high turnover of players from last year's team.
