The Irish goal was in no way one of the most important goals ever.

Why the hell are they playing up that goal so much?

It got a full feature on the news and then on the Late Late they showed and talked about it and so on. Foolishly comparing it to the most important goals Ireland EVER scored in the world cup, european championships, and the victory against Holland.

The Germans are practically certain to go through. They're still top of the table. As far as I know (and a quick check of the internet confirms), the Dutch were on the other hand under enormous pressure to get a good result. It's a totally different scenario altogether. Top teams very often get a bad result or two in a campaign. Germany already lost 2-0 to Poland in the same campaign.

It's miles from one of the most important or biggest goals Ireland ever scored. If we get to a playoff we're still likely to go out. It's also the European Championship qualifiers, which are really not as great as the world cup no matter how you look at it. I'm sure throughout history Ireland got many similar results in qualifying. They already even drew Germany, and they've drawn many top teams like Italy and France etc. over the years.

It's not even like the stakes were huge, since if we had drawn or even lost we'd still have a very good shot of a playoff place. A playoff place, not even a spot in the final championship.

The most important goal is to stay alive as long as possible.
