I've looked through a lot of forums on here but this is my first time actually posting. So I'm in 5th year and basically I'm thinking of taking up an 8th subject either on my own or with a teacher outside of school. I'm kind of leaning towards picking a business subject since I'm currently not doing any. So out of Business,Accounting and Economics or any subject in general what would be good to take up? And in case you're interested I'm doing the usual subjects, French,Chemistry,History and Biology all at HL.

Do you have any particular reason for wanting to take up an 8th subject? History and Biology are fairly heavy on theory as it is.

Yeah I know what you mean but I mainly want to because I don't think I'll be counting French for points since it's only a month in and I'm already struggling to scrape a C and I'm aiming for high points. I don't want to just leave myself with 6 subjects then so just to be safe really.

Im in fifth year, doing english, irish, maths, applied maths, chemistry, physics, econ and french. Out of all of the subjects Im doing, economics is by far the easiest. Just learn off the definitions and youll do really well. I can see why you would want to do eight subjects. I dont think id do well in english and i want the security of 7 others. Just to be aware, unlike science, business is not a requirement for any cao course.

    Best of luck.

I'd say economics as well. None of it is rocket science and like another poster said, learn all of the definitions, know the graphs and once you're up to date with current tax rates, figures, etc. You'll be fine.

I'm in 5th year as well and I took up Economics as an 8th subject at the start of the year. Fair warning, it really is difficult to drag yourself to the extra class on top of the homework from all your other subjects, so don't pick up any subject you aren't genuinely interested in.

Out of Business, Accounting and Economics I would say that Economics is definitely the easiest to do by yourself. It's seen as an 'easy' subject, but in reality no subject is easy and you'll have to put in a lot of work to get a good result. Other subjects with short courses you could do would be Applied Maths or Ag Science.

It depends on the individual but as stated, an 8th subject can be a major undertaking. I decided to improve my weaker subjects rather than take on more but what I did might not work for you. You should think about whether it's easier to get your French up a few grades or to take on something else.

I picked up Accounting this year without doing any business in the JC, im a 5th year too.

According to some statistics accounting is one of the easiest subjects to get an A1 in, the questions are ALWAYS the same, just diffrent figures.

The subject will be too challenging though if you do not learn the basics and the methods, there is VERY little theory involved, there isnt too many questions, if you dedicate yourself to learning how to do the accounts right you can get atleast a B.

If you are 'struggling' with language at this point, then an eighth subject is plain daft. I think an eighth subject is a bit daft anyway. All too often it is taken on as a vanity project. Why not work away as best you can and do well? Then use your time to indulge in a hobby, social life etc? Good luck in any case.
