Fair few miles on it alright but you'd need to check into how it's been serviced to know whether there's much life left in it.

To be honest bigger issues for me would be the base spec and the fact it's woefully underpowered IMO. A Ford Focus is not a rare car.. I'd keep looking for a better spec, better powered one myself.

How is it woefully underpowered, you mean the 1.4 engine?

135,000 miles is not massive for a now almost 10 year old car. That works out at about 13,500 miles per year which would be just above average for a petrol car. However the 1.4 Focus is woefully underpowered, along with the base LX model spec would have me looking at something else. 1.6 litre in Zetec or Ghia spec is much better.

Not exactly cheap asking price either. Here is a higher spec 1.6 litre Ghia model with lower mileage for similar money.

Depends on how much you value buys from a dealer really. You'd surely do better private.
focus Lx Is Basic though, even with the extra bits in that it's still a bit plain.
The 1.4 is a bit pedestrian, but given how many were sold - there's obviously a market for that sort of thing.m

I think you could do worse tbh.

It's a very respectabe basic spec with all the neccessary Irish extras (fogs, alloys, electric windows, remote locking and a/c), it offers much more than a comparable Golf for a much better price. The black is quite smart looking too imo.

A friend bought an almost identical 05 with similar mileage from a dealer around a 3 months ago for €3750.

You do get a lot of remarks on the 1.4 focus being a bit slow and I guess in the grand scheme it is, but it's not a million miles away from it's competitors in reality.

Does it have AC though? Button would normally be in the right above the knobs.
    I don't think it does.

This higher spec Ghia with lower mileage for similar money:

BTW that LX doesn't have a/c. Has the quick clear windscreen though.

My nct on my 06 car was also due 01/16. Got a note through the door saying do nct before 05th October and you'll get 2 years rather than 1. Got it serviced and passed.
Same would have happened here. Either vendor is a muppet for not getting it sorted or it couldn't pass nct .
    Just sayin.

the higher spec 1.6 is also higher in running costs, fuel, tax etc.

What do you guys think of hyundai, are they good make?

How can http://www.driving.ie/used-cars/Hyundai/Accent/1.4-GLS/201014432625324010/ be less than 2k

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The difference in motor tax between 1.4 and 1.6 is €129 per year. Fuel consumption difference is marginal between both.

the accent isn't a bad car as such. it's very well equipped and the engine is good and powerful. they don't really give trouble.
it isn't as big as a focus/golf though, it has an old fashoned interior, and its not very refined.

that said, it's cheap. and anyone I know that has one is happy.

less than 2k for a 2007 model though? what about http://www.jasonobriencars.ie/viewanad.php?ad_id=1354824

on the face of things the accent is reasonable. some of those models can be fairly fond of a drop of oil, so given the mileage, the tow bar and the fact that these are a bit of a farmers favourite, i'd be wary of it if it didn't have some kind of service history tbh.

they aren't a bad car in that they are reliable, parts and servicing are cheap, it's a decent spec and looks ok; but you'l only have to sit in it once to realize why it's half the price of the focus. they feel very flimsy, everything just feels a bit budget, but you are paying half the asking price so i guess it's a reasonable compromise, all things considered.

worth noting that the mk2 focus has a 5 star euro n-cap rating whereas the hyundai had a 2 star, and was then demoted to a 1 star rating.

you're probably restricting yourself a lot by only shopping in dealers with less than €4k, your money would go a lot further privately. i know it's very predictable but these are well worth a look too http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/toyota-corolla/10392677

you'l find with most garages with "small money" cars, you'l have no real warranty anyway. if it's anything more than a blown bulb they will try wash their hands of you.

you do see threads like this (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057496973) on here all too often and the long and the short of it is, you're ****ed.

i'm not saying all garages are bad by any means, but you can be sure if the timing belt breaks on that Accent for example, i'd say the garage won't want to know you.

it might be an idea, if you see something nice privately, to hire a mechanic to look at it and if it's sound, go for it.

What sort of warranty are you expecting on a 2k Hyundai from a dealer?

You have legal rights when buying from a dealer regardless of their trying to wash their hands

the chances of you successfully availing of those legal rights is slim to nil if the dealer isn't playing ball.

    did you read that thread?

Isn't that the previous generation Accent

the one linked is the badge engineered Kia Rio which got 4 stars.

i reckon you could be right there so. the 05-08 shares various components with the previous 00-05 accents chassis wise so i made the leap of faith that they were still using the original early 90's chassis right up to 08.

Rip off at that price tbh. Always went private and never had a single issue.

The newer ones have a different engine too. it has variable valve timing and stuff.

The real surprise is the 1.5 diesel which is a total hoot to drive.

a 1.5 turbo diesel rubbish bin :pac: sounds like good banter alright!

It's kinda like the Yaris van to me. I would be used to driving 1.0 Yariss, and a big wallop of torque in a 1.4 D-4D just feels wrong, and makes the whole thing feel so unexpected. Same thing in the Accent. You're so used to them being underpowered misery boxes, the newer ones actually have good enough steering, and the diesel has a shove of power down low, which you just don't expect. It's still not a fireball, but it makes for a lot of fun.

Just because you have legal rights doesn't mean that getting a satisfactory result is all plain sailing by just turning up at their door quoting the sale of goods act. Make sure you have plenty of time and patience in order to pursue a satisfactory outcome on a car valued at not a whole lot.
