Are appointments based on length of service in the Garda?
I noticed that a lot of detectives are pretty old.

Yes, you've to meet a minimum requirement of time served

There are also young detectives, the detectives that are old could be more senior detectives or even just senior in rank and in plain cloths ;)

What's the hardest unit to get into?

    The commissioners office :p

Probably the hardest for Gaurds are the NSS posts such as mounted unit, water unit, air support unit or dog units. ERU also. It's usually because these posts attract a high volume of applications on the rare occasions they do advertise for positions. Then there's the nepotism. Let's not go there.

ERU defo the hardest unit to get into in terms of selection its highly sought after for very few jobs and selection training is pretty tough

From what I've read the ERU is by far and large the most difficult unit.
You get trained along side army rangers and the FBI and it has about a 90% plus fail rate from applicants.
Training involves you getting tasered and pepper sprayed, performing tasks whilst blinded. It's grueling. But it makes sense, in worst case scenarios such as terrorist attacks you need to have the best possible trained police to deal with it.
You also get no extra pay.
This is according to Wikipedia at least, I don't know any members and even so it's all confidential and they never get named.

Wikipedia is usually **** some of the info is okay but like they name out loads of guns the ERU use like the mp5 like they never used that ever! They dont really train with arw big rivalry between them and they do train with the FBI HRT the ERU are regarded as one of the most well trained police swat teams in the world

Yeah I had to say that because that was the only place I could get info and wasn't taking it for gospel.

I'd say you have to be cut from a very particular type of cloth in order to be suitable for the ERU.

OK. I'm going to go with the Garda Band.

Think about it. Starting from scratch, you'd realistically be looking at 15 years of study and practice before you'd stand a chance in the audition process, against applicants holding postgraduate performance qualifications. Plus, aside from the air support unit, I can't think of any where numbers are so limited.

I believe the ARU is the most difficult (as there isnt a whole lot of members of the force armed)

The units of an garda siochana are as follows

Air support unit (helicopter in baldonnel i think)
Garda mounted and dog unit (phoneix park)
SDU (special detectives unit attached to a dublin station)
ARU (armed response unit -part of sdu some in dublin ,cork big cities etc)
ERU (emergency response-part of sdu dublin cork etc)
CSB (crime and security branch-intelligence gathering area dublin and some areas throughout )
    CAB (criminal assets bureau dublin)
DV & SA U (domestic violence and sexual assault unit - also there is specialised child sexual assault by plain clothes members always in this unit -spread throughout the country)
    Traffic corps(dublin castle)
    C&C (Command and control) .
CPU (community policing unit-throughout most towns and cities)

    Also the ranks are

    Commissioner
    Deputy Commissioner
    Assistant Commissioner
    Chief Superintendent
    Superintendent
    Garda detective
    Garda Inspector
    Garda Sergeant
Garda (3yrs general service required before applying to get into other areas)
    Garda trainee
    Reserve Garda

im open to correction and addition to the above information as thats what im aware of within an garda siochana

Everything right bar detective. Detective isnt part of the rank structure. And a detective is still garda rank just on different duties and in plain clothes. It is what i would call a step sideways from a garda.

Garda mounted and dog unit (phoneix park)
SDU (special detectives unit attached to a dublin station)Harcourt terrace
ARU (armed response unit -part of sdu some in dublin ,cork big cities etc)Although SDU are armed response, you also have the marked armed response that are based throughout the country and not only cities.Detectives are also armed
ERU (emergency response-part of sdu dublin cork etc)Fairly sure dublin only and are deployed where and when needed
Traffic corps(dublin castle)Regional traffic are based in the castle, then you have divisional traffic based in the 6 divisions of Dublin.Theres also a traffic corp in every division outside of Dublin
    C&C (Command and control) .
CPU (community policing unit-throughout most towns and cities)

    Also the ranks are

    Commissioner
    Deputy Commissioner
    Assistant Commissioner
    Chief Superintendent
    Superintendent
    Garda detective
    Garda Inspector
    Garda Sergeant

    Garda trainee
