Hi, sorry I don't have specific model numbers but my parents LG tv has a record option in the Saorview EPG but when you press it it tells you there is no recording device attached. I thought initially it was looking for a USB key but this doesnt seem to be the case, does anyone know what Im looking for here?

Yes I think it is looking for a USB key, but it has to be formatted. You can find info in the settings menu>Support> userguide>advancedfunction
But I havent used it yet. Did try but was a dodgy usb, so I have to try it with a different USB..

I dont think so, its looking for a device not a USB key.

On our LG TV (smart TV) you can use a USB key or a USB HDD. Device has to go in one specific USB slot (we have three and it needs to go into number one the top one). Then you have to format it to some weird format that won't play on anything else (to stop piracy?) then you can pause programs, record etc.

Then you can also plug a USB key or USB HDD into USB port number one (I think thats a powered port the others may not be) and play films you can play on your computer with formats like MP4, AVI, FLK etc.

So two separate features. One to record and playback the other just to play standard recorded formats.

This is an older model though and I really got the impression it was looking for a specific peripheral, Ill get the exact model number this weekend and see.

And check the manual, either through the TV or download it from LG website.

I dont think that tv records. It sounds like a computer monitor with a hd tuner. If it doesnt have a usb port i dont think so, which according to the specs it doesnt...

Oh it definitely has USB, and theres a section about USB in the manual on that page.

I don't see any mention of recording via the USB port, it's only an input.

Recording seems to be done by way of output over SCART (AV1), say to a DVD recorder or VCR.

Yeah thats what has me confused, but there is a record option right there in the Saorview EPG on the tv, when have you ever heard of a tv sending commands to a recording device through a SCART cable? What kind of device am I even looking for?

This is the quote from the manual, section dealing with EPG:
Button Function in Record/Remind Setting Mode
Sets a start or end time for recording, and sets only a start time for the reminder with the end time
    grayed out.
This function is available only when recording equipment that use pin8 recording signalling has been
connected to the TV-OUT(AV1) terminal, using a SCART cable.

Probably any VCR or DVD recorder has this capability.

I havent looked into the particular model yet, but a lot of the early LG's disabled the usage of the USB port for anything other than upgrading firmware. From what I have seen in LG ranges if you downgrade the software, you can access the USB port for Media purposes (ie video playing of avi and recording)
