Somatogravic Illusion

Never heard of this illusion before, it is hard to work out from the article and maybe I am missing it...but would the pilots have been aware how much trouble they where in? They mention 'verbal prompts' and that steps where taken to correct pitch but I am not sure if this was evasive action or just normal adjustments.
Tragic event in any case.

This illusion was implicated in the Air Corps 265 crash also. Some good explanatory information in Section 2.

Haven't read the AAIB report, but if the PNF gave verbal prompts to the PF regarding pitch, he may not have been affected by the illusion, or may have been head down monitoring instruments. Looks like it happened very quickly, with insufficient time for effective corrective actions.
