The fireplace in Ongar is a waste of space in my opinion. I'd love to know if anybody has removed theirs and if they can advise suppliers, builders or a quote.

    Thanks in advance

I have removed fireplace in my house. The only thing I had problem with was a gas pipe, so asked specialist to cut it off. I did everything else myself.
To remove fireplace you will need only hammer and crowbar and this will save you lot of money if you are on low budget.
Then I insulated the chimney pipe , cut the plasterboard to the size, made wooden frame and spent some time on plastering. I had gas company to do something else so did not pay anything for cutting gas pipe, and total cost was 0. I had to buy one plasterboard and one bag of skimcoat, but I have sold the inside of fireplace in scrapyard so in fact I had some cash left. I did it 5 years ago and so far all good

Thanks. Are there plumbing pipes behind the chimney breast? If you've any pictures of the job I'd love to see them please

The role of gas fireplace is emergency heating if electricity breaks down in winter for longer while. But who remember longer power cut in last 10 years ;)

Each house is different so I cannot answer. There were no other pipes other than Gas pipe that was connected from the side and ventilation pipe from above in my case
